Lyndon Johnson was a Hyper Zionist who had many rich, powerful, intelligent and capable Jewish friends: scores of them.

[This is a rough, unpolished research file on the many Zionist and Jewish friends of Lyndon Johnson.]

On June 7, 1967 – President Lyndon Johnson, a Zionist tool if there ever was one, of the USA and Israel intentionally orchestrated an attack on the USS Liberty in which Lyndon Johnson and government of Israel murdered 34 Americans and wounded another 171. LBJ’s goal in ordering Israel to do this was to sink the USS Liberty and murdered all 294 Americans on board and then blame the attack on Egypt. The goal was for the USA to have a pretext to attack Nasser of Egypt, remove him from power and then have the USA control the Middle East through its dominance over Egypt and in alliance with Israel.

The best book on the USS Liberty is Joan Mellen’s Blood in the Water: How the US and Israel Conspired to Ambush the USS Liberty: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Joan-Mellen/dp/1633884643/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_es_US=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=joan+mellen+blood+in+the+water.&qid=1628369211&sr=8-1

Joan Mellen is Jewish but she is not a Zionist. Lyndon Johnson was a Zionist and not only that a traitor many times over to his country, the USA, both in the JFK assassination, which he orchestrated, and in the 1967 USS Liberty murders which he also, orchestrated.

Lyndon Johnson was a mass murderer and many Jews today in year 2021, look the other way from his many crimes because he was a great friend of Israel and he also had many Jewish friends. My comment: I am sure Adolph Hitler was nice to his secretary but he was still a mass murderer and needs to be held to account for that. Ditto the mass murderer and life long criminal Lyndon Johnson.

This file here is a “rough file” that documents Lyndon Johnson’s extremely close ties to Zionists and Jews because that proves that there is no way in hell Israel in 1967 would ever attack an American ship without the direct orders of the American president behind it.

Sincerely,

Robert Morrow        Austin, TX   78746

One think I think you are really underestimating is just how many Zionist Jews (and Zionist Christians) were around LBJ from the 1930s to 1967. Scores of them. And they were all telling Israel, LBJ is your most wonderful friend. Which is why any intentional attack by Israel on an American ship had to have been cleared (suggested, ordered) by LBJ.

Luci Johnson – on growing up in an area where there were many Jewish families because there were no deed restrictions

QUOTE

I grew up in Washington in an area fondly known as "Hanukkah Heights." We lived in "Hanukkah Heights" because there were no restrictive covenants as there were in other areas that discriminated against buyers based on their color or religion. My first employer and forever friend was one of the first Jews able to buy a home in what had been a restricted neighborhood. The Fair Housing Act was not just a bill for justice to me. It was all so very personal.

So is the station on Van Ness street? Nope. Well, is the neighborhood called Van Ness? Nope, it’s called Forest Hills. And, as it turns out, Forest Hills actually has a very interesting history. For the first half of the 20th century, restrictive covenants made it so builders, developers, and owners of real estate could refuse to sell to minorities. Neighborhoods throughout D.C. operated under these covenants, but Forest Hills was an exception. Since homes in Forest Hills were constructed by individual builders, the neighborhood was not under the jurisdiction of a single developer who could impose a restrictive covenant on the entire neighborhood. The inclusive nature of Forest Hills led to a huge inpouring of minority residents, the highest number of which were Jews. In fact, there were so many Jews, the neighborhood was nicknamed “Hannukah Heights.”

On the Friday night after Kennedy’s November 1963 assassination, as attorney Sheldon Cohen was heading out to services at his synagogue, he got a call from Abe Fortas, whom Johnson would later appoint to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In an interview Monday, Cohen recalled that Fortas asked him to come over to his Georgetown home to help the new president and first lady sort out their personal finances.

Their radio stations would go into a blind trust. But how to dispose of the house?

SHELDON COHEN -  helped LBJ with his personal affairs and LBJ later appointed Sheldon Cohen as the head of the IRS. https://www.timesofisrael.com/sheldon-cohen-commissioner-who-computerized-irs-dies-at-91/

QUOTE

Cohen, who grew up in Washington, DC, served as IRS commissioner under President Lyndon B. Johnson. He first worked with Johnson shortly after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Cohen also helped Johnson with his business affairs following a phone call from his mentor, lawyer Abe Fortas, as Cohen was heading to Shabbat services one Friday night, according to The Post. Cohen created a blind trust for a radio station owned by the president in order to avoid a conflict of interest. Fortas would later serve as a Supreme Court justice.

In 1964, Cohen started working at the IRS as chief counsel and a year later took over as commissioner. The IRS was starting to use computers to aid with processing tax returns, and Cohen helped the agency become fully computerized, according to The Post.

Cohen also was mired in controversy over the tax agency’s use of wiretapping in criminal cases.

He had worked previously at the IRS, in 1952, the year he graduated from George Washington University’s law school.

Cohen, the son of a shopkeeper from Lithuania, was involved in the Jewish community, serving as an honorary life trustee of the American Jewish Historical Society.

Following his nomination to be IRS commissioner, he said that his two “pet charities” were Washington’s Jewish social service agency and Jewish community center.

1)    Walt Rostow – national security advisor for LBJ from 1966-1969 – Jewish https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Whitman_Rostow

QUOTE

Rostow was born in Manhattan, New York City, to a Russian Jewish immigrant family. His parents, Lillian (Helman) and Victor Rostow,[4] were active socialists, and named Walt after the poet Walt Whitman. Rostow's father, Victor Rostowsky, was born in the town of Orekhov near Odessa in 1886, and was involved in the Russian socialist movement as a teenager, publishing a left-wing newspaper calling for the overthrow of the Emperor Nicholas II in the basement of his parents' house.[5] In 1904, at the age of 18, Victor Rostowsky boarded a ship that took him from Odessa to Glasgow and another ship that took him to New York.[6] Upon arriving in the United States, Rostowsky "Americanized" his surname to Rostow.[6] On 22 October 1912, he married Lillian Helman, the intellectually gifted daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants who longed go to college, but as her family was too poor to afford higher education, she instead encouraged her sons to attain the higher education she wanted for herself.[7] Like the Rostowskys, the Helmans were Ashkenazim (Yiddish-speaking Jews). The Rostows were described as being very "idealistic" immigrants who deeply loved their adopted country and named their three sons after the three men they considered to be the greatest Americans, namely Eugene V. Debs, Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson.[8]

Unlike many other Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants, Victor Rostow always spoke to his children in English rather than Yiddish as he felt this was would improve their chances in life.[6] Rostow's brother Eugene, who was named for Eugene V. Debs, became a legal scholar, and his brother Ralph, a department store manager. The American journalist Stanley Karnow described Rostow as extremely intelligent with a "brilliant" academic record that saw him graduate from high school at the age of 15.[8] Rostow described his childhood as mostly happy with the only dark spots being that sometimes his classmates called him and his brothers "dirty Jews".[9]

Rostow's parents closely followed events in Russia and Rostow later recalled a defining moment of his life occurred as a teenager when his parents invited over for a dinner a group of fellow Jewish socialists together with a man who was serving as a purchasing agent for the Soviet government.[10] After the dinner, Rostow remembered that his father said: "These communists took over the Tsarist police and made them worse. The Tsarist police persecuted the political opposition but never touched their families. These people touch families too. Nothing good will come of it".[10] Rostow entered Yale University at the age of 15 on a full scholarship, graduated at 19, and completed his Ph.D. there in 1940. He also won a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Balliol College, Oxford, where he completed a B.Litt. degree. At Oxford, Rostow became friends with future politicians Edward Heath and Roy Jenkins, being especially close to the latter.

Agudas Achim, though smaller than Beth Israel, had also outgrown its building. They bought land on Bull Creek Road in 1958 for $19,500. Their fundraising effort to build on the new land got a big boost in 1962 when they sold their old property to the U.S. Government for $144,000; the government tore down the synagogue and constructed a new federal building on the property. With this windfall, possibly the result of Jim Novy’s influence with Vice President Lyndon Johnson, the congregation was able to begin construction on a new synagogue. Jim Novy, who had headed up the fundraising effort for the new building, as he had done for the old building three decades earlier, got his old friend Lyndon Johnson to agree to give the keynote address at the new synagogue’s dedication, which was set for November 24, 1963. When history interceded in Dallas on November 22nd with the assassination of President Kennedy, the ceremony was postponed. A month later, now President Lyndon Johnson came to Austin and dedicated the new synagogue due to his friendship with Novy, who introduced the president that night. This marked the first and only time a U.S. President has dedicated a Jewish house of worship.

2) Stanley Marcus, owner of Neiman Marcus was a big time friend of Lyndon Johnson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Marcus

Following Kennedy's death, Marcus maintained close ties with Johnson and his administration, being considered for diplomatic posts to France and to the United Nations General Assembly while continuing to run his company[52][53] and providing the wedding dresses for both the Johnsons' daughters, personally assisting Luci Johnson in selecting the designer for her own dress and the styles for the bridesmaids' gowns.[54] After Johnson's retirement, Marcus's invitations were among the few the former president and his wife continued to accept.[55] Marcus's own daughter Wendy joined Mrs. Johnson's staff for a time in 1963, working under Mrs. Johnson's personal secretary, Liz Carpenter.[56]

2b) Wendy Marcus, daughter of Stanley Marcus and a later Harvard Law grad, immediately went to work at the Johnson White House after the JFK assassination. {Liz Carpenter, Ruffles and Flourishes, p. 118]

Wendy Marcus obituary https://obits.dallasnews.com/obituaries/dallasmorningnews/obituary.aspx?n=wendy-marcus-raymont&pid=193729966

Wendy Marcus Raymont, 80, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 under the mountains, stars and night sky of Tepoztlán, Mexico, a village she loved deeply, where she and her husband, Henry Raymont, have lived for two years. A few hours after her death a shooting star lit up the night, heading south. Wendy died from complications of Alzheimer's disease, her family said. She'd been diagnosed with the disease in 2015. Wendy Raymont was born Wendy Marcus in Dallas, Texas on October 2, 1938, daughter of Neiman Marcus President Stanley Marcus and Billie Marcus. She was the younger sister to Jerrie Marcus Smith of Dallas and Camden, Maine, and the slightly older twin sister to Richard Marcus, of Austin, Texas. Wendy is survived by her husband, Henry Raymont, of Mexico, her son, Daniel Raymont (Bonnie), of New York, Adam Raymont (Katrin), of Berlin, Sarah Raymont (Alex), of New York, three granddaughters, Lulu, Minnie and Linden, and grandson Theodore Eugene, born in Berlin the week before her death. Wendy loved the Dallas she grew up in. She attended the Hockaday School, and did her homework with the radio beside her head so she could follow The Dallas Eagles baseball games. She went on to Smith College, where she majored in Government and graduated summa cum laude. She graduated from Harvard Law School in 1965, one of a handful of pioneering women in the law. She remembered one class where the professor designated a random day a month where he'd call only on women. She and the other female law students had to be extra prepared "every day," because they never knew when that day would come. Wendy met journalist Henry Raymont of Koenigsbourg, Germany at the White House, where she worked. It was the first Black Tie and Boots party hosted by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Henry noticed her dancing with a naval officer and made his move, impersonating the nephew of impresario Sol Hurok. Replete with a thick Russian accent, he offered her tickets to the touring Bolshoi Ballet. Wendy liked to tell people that, as she worked in the White House, it was perfectly easy to obtain her own seats to the ballet, and she politely declined his invitation. Nevertheless, she was charmed by the newspaperman, and they courted next at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, where Wendy was accompanying the First Lady, and Henry was on hand, ready to show them the best of San Juan. They were married in the library of the St. Regis Hotel in New York in 1966. Friends of his gave the marriage a month. Friends of her father tried to steer the ship elsewhere. They were married for fifty-three years. Wendy Raymont began her career in Washington clerking for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas. She moved to the White House and worked as assistant to Lady Bird Johnson. She then worked for the law firm Coudert Brothers in Paris, and Time Magazine in New York. She returned to Washington to work as legal counsel to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration within the Commerce Department. She valued volunteering or serving on such boards as The National Center for Therapeutic Riding in Washington DC and the Arena Stage. She left the government after training to become a mediator and used this training to work for immigrant rights in Boston, against corruption at Transparency International in Berlin, and the Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) in Washington. Wendy inspired many young women in her life to pursue careers outside the home. She encouraged them to be strong, independent thinkers and envision what they could do in their lives. She valued intellect, social responsibility, justice and empathy. To hear her laugh was to feel better about your life in this world. Her laughter was a hug. She loved embarrassing her children with noisy demonstrations of how "marvelous" life was, and really, it was she who was marvelous: she had a profound faith in life and those who knew her, learned it. Wendy believed in transparency and conversation, and never gave up her optimism for the United States and its potential for justice for all. Services scheduled for a later date. Memorials may be made to: Smith College, Raices, or the Alzheimer's Association. A good way to remember Wendy would be to engage someone you don't see eye to eye with, or, take a walk with someone younger. Show them the trees, that growing up in this world is a wonder, too.

Wiki: Married with two children, Meyer, who was Jewish, and his family were forced to flee France following the Nazi occupation during World War II. He came to Lazard Frères' New York City office with Chairman Pierre David-Weill (1900–1975) and following the Allied Forces liberation in 1944 David-Weill returned to France and Meyer was appointed head of the American operations, a position he would occupy for the rest of his life.

Wiki André Meyer, called "the most creative financial genius of our time in the investment banking world" by David Rockefeller, became one of the most important people in American business with an influence that extended around the globe. Known as "The Picasso of Banking," he introduced innovative financing techniques to post-War American business. During the 1960s, Meyer was responsible for making Lazard Frères the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) firm in the U.S. He put together prodigious deals through leveraged buyouts for companies such as International Telephone & Telegraph Company (ITT) who grew to become the ninth largest industrial corporation in the United States.

Although he personally was publicity-shy, André Meyer was an advisor to the Kennedy family and a lifelong friend and advisor to Jackie Onassis. He was a friend and advisor to other high-profile public figures such as William S. Paley at CBS and Katharine Graham at the Washington Post. He was also a close confidant of U.S, President Lyndon Johnson, consulting at the Oval Office several times a year during Johnson's tenure.

QUOTE

Between 1964 and 1968, Meyer visited the Johnson White House twenty-four times, including eleven private Oval Office chats. And that didn’t count the innumerable occasions when Johnson would pick up the phone and call Meyer, or ask an intermediary to check with the financier. “At least five or six times a year, LBJ sought Andre’s opinion on something,” says former UA chair Arthur Krim, who often served as a liaison between the two men.

Born in New York City and raised in Brooklyn, Halprin spent three years on a kibbutz in the British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel) before attending Cornell University and then the University of Wisconsin, where he earned an M.S. in horticulture. He received his B.L.A. from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. After apprenticing with Thomas Church, during which time Church built the famed Donnell garden in Sonoma, Halprin opened his own office in 1949. Among his innovations is the design process known as the RSVP Cycles. This method is marked by attention to human scale, user experience, and the social impact of design; these strengths were likely fueled by the work of his wife, dancer Anna Schuman Halprin. Simultaneously he was able to attend to environmental concerns and to incorporate community participation in the design process. Prolific throughout his life, his major projects include the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C.; the Sea Ranch community in California; Freeway Park in Seattle; Heritage Park Plaza in Fort Worth, Texas, and Lovejoy Plaza in Portland, Oregon. Halprin garnered numerous awards, including the Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture and the National Medal of Arts, the latter bestowed by the President of the United States.

E. Ernest Goldstein bio- https://www.amherst.edu/amherst-story/magazine/in_memory/1939/ernestgoldstein

Eeser Ernest Goldstein ’39 died on May 25, 2008.  His life’s work—public affairs, education, and family—had their genesis at Amherst College.  It was there that he met his wife, Peggy Rosenfeld (Smith ’41), who predeceased him in August 2003.  And it was at Amherst that he was deeply influenced by Professors Cole and Warne.  But the exclusion of Jews from Amherst fraternities and the admissions quota then in effect also spurred him to fight, lifelong, for those who are excluded by prejudice.

During World War II, Ernest Goldstein served in the Signal Corps as a cryptanalyst deciphering German naval intelligence.  He then completed his law school education and went to work first at the Department of Justice in Alien Property, tracking down American corporations secretly owned by German companies. He then served as associate majority counsel to Senator Kefauver’s Organized Crime Committee and as counsel to Congressmen Celler’s Antitrust Subcommittee at a time when it investigated whether Major League Baseball’s use of the reserve clause to restrict baseball players’ freedom to contract should cause it to lose its antitrust exemption.  According to contemporaneous articles from the Washington Post, my father questioned, among others, Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio, Duke Snider, and Branch Rickey.  In 1952, he took a position in Paris with the Mutual Security Agency, advising Marshall Plan beneficiaries on the development of antitrust laws.

After securing an SJD in 1955 from the Univ. of Wisconsin, Ernest Goldstein taught for ten years at the Univ. of Texas law school, where he led the fight to integrate the dormitories at the Univ. of Texas and was responsible for Dr. King being the first African-American ever invited to speak at the university.  When the regents tried to fire him for these efforts, the entire law school, but one, resigned and the regents backed down.  As a result of his fight for civil rights, he came to the attention of President Johnson, whom he later served as a special assistant to the president.

After his tenure in the White House, he was a partner at Coudert Freres in Paris and, concurrently with his private practice, fought quietly through back channels for Soviet Jews seeking to emigrate.  When in the mid-1990s my father returned to Austin, TX, where he again taught and advised the University’s library on copyright matters, he became deeply involved in establishing a program to finance a program for poor college-bound African-Americans to spend a post-high school year at Deerfield Academy.

Peggy Goldstein chose to be a sculptor and a wife—roles thought to be incompatible in 1941.  Throughout his life, Ernest Goldstein supported the idea in his home life—where he was also an active father to his daughter, Susan, and son, Daniel ’69—and at work, that men and women both could and should have full careers and meaningful home lives.

It seems to me that he made good use of an Amherst education.

In planning for the dedication of Syracuse University’s magnificent new S.I. Newhouse Communications Center, a masterpiece of modern architecture, designed by I.M. Pei, Chancellor William P. Tolley and S.I. Newhouse travelled to Washington D.C. in March of 1964 to meet with President Lyndon B. Johnson.

According to Tolley’s memoirs, Johnson agreed to come to Syracuse for the dedication only to secure a commitment from Newhouse to support Johnson’s upcoming campaign across his vast media empire, which, in fact, had roots in Syracuse.

The Syracuse Herald and Syracuse Journal were among the first newspapers Newhouse acquired back in 1939. In 1941, he purchased the Post-Standard. Newhouse agreed and Johnson committed to the August 5th date.

None of these men, however, could have imagined that a building dedication, even one attended by the President of the United States, would be of global historical significance.

In 1955, with Lazard Frères backing, Lilienthal and his TVA successor, Gordon Clapp, founded the Development and Resources (D&R) Corporation. It provided managerial and technical services to foreign nations for developing natural resources through TVA-like projects. By 1967 the company's fees totaled over $3 million a year. At President Lyndon Johnson's instigation, Lilienthal and his associates signed a three-year contract with the federal government to plan the development of the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam. Although D&R initially had with significant successes, it ultimately failed. D&R met its downfall in the late 1970s principally because of its associations with two of America's greatest foreign policy disasters: Vietnam and Iran.

On October 6, 1943, three days before Yom KippurHillel Kook (aka Peter Bergson) organized a march to Washington DC (the famous Rabbis March) by a delegation of some 400 rabbis, most if not all Orthodox and some recent immigrants, to make a public appeal to the United States government to do more to try to rescue the abandoned Jews of Europe. It was the only such protest in Washington during the Holocaust. The rabbis were received at steps of the Capitol by the Senate majority and minority leaders, and the Speaker of the House. After prayers for the war effort at the Lincoln Memorial the rabbis went to the White House to plead with President Roosevelt and were told that the President is busy all day and Vice President Henry Wallace met them instead. It was later learned that Roosevelt had several free hours that afternoon, but was advised by both Stephen Wise (head of the World Jewish Congress) and Samuel Rosenman (the President's advisor, speech writer and head of the American Jewish Committee) that the protesting rabbis "were not representative" of American Jewry and not the kind of Jews he should meet. Wise also accused the rabbis of "offending the dignity of the Jewish people."[6]

Rosalind (Roz) Wiener Wyman (b. 1930-) was the youngest person (and only the second woman) ever elected to the Los Angeles City Council and one of the youngest elected officials of a major U.S. city, as well as the first Jewish Council member in 53 years. Wyman graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1948 and attended the University of Southern California where she received a B.S. in Public Administration in 1952. She became politically active in college, launched her successful campaign for the City Council seat and was elected in 1953 when she was just 22. During her first Council term in 1954 she married attorney Eugene Wyman, a graduate of Northwestern University and Harvard Law School - a fellow Democratic activist, who founded a large entertainment law firm in Los Angeles. While on the city council, Rosalind Wyman was the first female acting mayor, and she played a pivotal role in bringing the Dodgers baseball team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1957. Unfortunately, controversies over that arrangement contributed to Wyman's defeat for a fourth term in 1965. After leaving office, and in the sad aftermath of her husband's unexpected death in 1973, Wyman continued her involvement in political and public affairs, her influence extending beyond California to the national Democratic Party. During the 1974 congressional campaigns, she became the first woman to head a major party's fund-raising efforts. She served as Convention Chair and chief executive officer of the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, the first woman of either major Party to wield the gavel at a presidential nominating convention. Wyman has been a delegate to every Democratic National Convention since 1952 (except one), last attending the historic 2008 Convention which nominated Barack Obama. Wyman's national appointments include the UNESCO Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has been a leader of the Los Angeles Jewish community, has received many Jewish community awards, chaired fund-raising events, and served on the board of American Friends of the Hebrew University. Wyman has also been a board member of many arts, social services, educational and health organizations, and has received numerous awards, locally and nationally.

Henry Waxman on when he was elected head of the California Federation of Young Democrats in 1965:

QUOTE

The national Democratic Party’s main power broker in California, a consigliere to both the Kennedy family and President Johnson, was a Los Angeles lawyer by the name of Eugene Wyman, who, much to my surprise, summoned me to a meeting shortly after I became president of the CFYD. Wyman congratulated me on my new role, but was agitated about my opposition to the war, and he sought to impress upon me the need to tone down my criticism of the president. “You’re in a position of authority when you speak for the Democratic Party,“ he complained. “You can’t be a leader of the Democratic Party and be against this war and the president.” I explained I didn’t think Johnson’s policy in Vietnam was the right one. Wyman insisted that I couldn’t say that. I was dumbfounded. “Well, how about civil rights?” I asked him. “Is it okay to talk about that?” “Oh, that would be fine,” he replied. When our meeting ended, I left amused rather than intimidated that such an important man cared so much about what I had to say.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 19—Eugene L. Wyman, a prominent fund raiser for the Democratic party, died, apparently of a heart attack, at his law office here today. He was 47 years old.

He leaves his wife, the former Rosalind Weiner, a member of the Los Angeles City Council; two sons, Bradley and Robert; a daughter, Betty, and two brothers, Melvin and Milford.

Backer of Humphrey

Eugene Wyman was the senior partner in the law firm of Wyman, Bautzer, Rothman & Kuchel and had served as State Democratic chairman in California and as a national committeeman.

Early in last year's Presidential campaign he raised the bulk of the funds for Hubert H. Humphrey's campaign.

When Senator George McGovern won the party's Presidential nomination, Mr. Wyman supported the Senator. However, he could not resist remarking that Mr. McGovern's choice of Sargent Shriver as this running mate, replacing Senator Thomas F. Eagleton, was “McGovern's first good move.”

Mr. Wyman entered political fundraising with John F. Kennedy's campaign in 1960. His theory of obtaining money was that big donors must be exposed to the candidate and “establish a personal relationship” with him.

Senator Humphrey had established contacts with wealthy men in California partly through his support of Jewish causes, and this caused Mr. Wyman to remark, “Hubert Humphrey is the best salesman of Israel bonds in the country.”

In 1965 Mr. Wyman assisted Pierre Salinger, the former press secretary to President Kennedy, in forming the Golden Bear Club, a Democratic fundraising organization.

During his 19-year tenure as AJC's Washington Representative, Bookbinder was widely considered the dean of Jewish representatives on Capitol Hill. He regularly briefed Members of Congress, many of whom were personal friends, published op-ed articles in The New York Times and Washington Post, testified before House and Senate committees, and was sought after for comment by print and broadcast media.

Born in 1916, Bookbinder retired in 1986 but continued to serve as AJC's Washington Representative Emeritus until his passing.

By the time Bookbinder joined the AJC staff in 1967, he was well experienced in the Washington political arena, navigating the halls of Congress and the Administration. He previously worked for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers and the AFL-CIO, in President Kennedy's Commerce Department, and as a key aide in President Johnson's war on poverty, working in the Office of Economic Opportunity. He also served as director of the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Foundation.

But, it was at AJC that Bookbinder felt most at home to pursue his passion for the causes dearest to the Jewish people – defense of Israel, civil rights, social policy, Holocaust remembrance, and Soviet Jewry.

ONLY 15 years ago, two distinguished human dynamos, President Lyndon Johnson and millionaire art collector Joseph Hirshhorn, reached an agreement. It led to Mr. Hirshhorn's donation of his collection of over 6,000 pieces of sculpture and modern painting to the public. After a protracted congressional dogfight and years of complaint from the art world, the Joseph H. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden opened finally on the Mall in 1974. Now, seven years later, "The Hirshhorn" has become recognized widely as a museum of stature.

Mr. Hirshhorn, who died yesterday at the age of 82, a Latvian-born immigrant who made his first fortune while still in his 20s, was a figure more easily described--and often caricatured--than understood. Once business success had provided sufficient funds for the task, he spent his adult life acquiring paintings and sculpture with a decisiveness and rapidity that became legendary in art circles. Despite the inevitable number of clinkers, a remarkably large percentage of the collection (much of which Mr. Hirshhorn assembled before obtaining any professional guidance) has weathered the skeptical scrutiny of critics.

Little Man in A Big Hurry: The Life of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, Uranium King and Art Collector, by Gene Hirshhorn LePere. This is the remarkable story of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, who donated the largest private art collection ever accumulated to the people of the United States. It is a rags-to-riches story of an immigrant Jewish boy, barely eight years old, who arrived in the United States from Latvia in 1907 and who, through oversized ambition, energy, smarts, luck, and determination, accumulated a multi-million dollar collection of contemporary art, now housed on the Mall in Washington, DC, in a building of the Smithsonian Museum which bears his name: The Joseph H. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The years covered are (his ancestry) from 1797 to 1825 and from the birth of Joseph on August 11, 1899, to his death in August 1981. The book covers the Friedlander and Hirshhorn families. Price: $26.95 Order from Vantage Press, 419 Park Avenue South, New York, New York 10016, (800) 882-3283; from The Hirshhorn Museum Gift Shop (203) 357-1429; or from The Bruce Museum (203) 869-0376. QUOTE

He was even more incredulous about the coup that would be his crowning achievement. His art collection was personally courted by President and Lady Bird Johnson. LePere relays the vigorous debate that surrounded its donation and the naming of the museum, citing an anonymous congressional statement that “the fear among politicians of the anti-Semitic label was Mr. Hirshhorn’s most important protector.” There were some legitimate critiques of the collection as being uneven, owing to the haphazard way in which it was assembled, but without Hirshhorn’s holdings it would have been virtually impossible for the government to catch up with peer institutions. In any case, the outcome prompted the Jewish immigrant from Latvia to marvel, “Just think of me, little Joe Hirshhorn, my name is going to be on a building on the Mall in Washington, D.C.—in perpetuity.”

Mr. Bloom has said his piece and they are ready to say good-bye. They call each other Sam and Lyndon, another button is pressed, and then Johnson is gone.

Following a highly successful 32-year career with the Dallas Times Herald, Sam Bloom resigned to open his own advertising agency. Starting in 1952 with a small office and three employees, he grew an agency that won national acclaim for its inspiration and ingenuity, helping to transform the status of retail advertising and its use in television.

Bloom's agency worked to transform Zales from a small town chain of jewelry stores into the world's largest jeweler. Grassroots advertising development and extensive efforts to learn the client's business from the ground up were key elements of his strategy.

Bloom believed advertising could change the way people think and influence their decisions. In the late 1950s, during a time of deep racial unrest throughout the South, he developed a campaign to sell the logic of peaceful integration to key cities such as Dallas, Miami and Memphis. His deep involvement with and dedication to civic affairs led many state and national leaders to seek his counsel. His concern for people and ability to see an issue from different perspectives were factors in President John F. Kennedy’s decision to name him to his White House conference on equal employment in 1961. Bloom’s infinite compassion for his fellow man and keen understanding of human condition earned him the respect and confidence of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Bloom continued to contribute through his leadership of the National Council of Christians and Jews.

Sam Bloom's list of accomplishments within his industry and his community were numerous and his honors many, yet he always found time to reach out, to help others and to give back.

Whenever Citizens' Council policies needed public enunciation, the Bloom Agency did the job. So it was that when Connally asked his friends to host a luncheon for President Kennedy, the Bloom agency undertook the arrangements -- including the distribution of invitations.

This was the problem Moyers wanted me to discuss with Sam. The Dallas liberal Democrats were outraged at being short-changed on invitations; Yarborough was protesting from Washington, and the conservative media loved the story. At a minimum, the job was to dampen the din.

Bloom was not surprised to see me walk into his office, even on a Sunday morning. Ten years earlier, I had left New York for Dallas, a city in which I knew not a soul. I had had a successful career in New York, first as an editor for Newsweek and then as director of talent and creative programming at ABC television. I was sure finding work in Dallas was a mere matter of asking.

Hardly. The city had little interest in an expatriate New Yorker who was also a female looking to do a man's work. Sam Bloom, however, became a mentor. One of the directions in which he steered me was political. I was soon working on Yarborough's first gubernatorial campaign, then doing jobs for Johnson and Rayburn.

If Sam was not surprised to see me, he certainly was not happy when I told him my mission. "Goddam it," he yelled. "I'm sick and tired of those people in Washington sending one guy after another in here claiming they are working for the White House. They come in, look around and then disappear. All they want to do is put their noses in our business and get tickets. I'm sick of hearing about tickets. Now what do you want?"

The father and son who arranged an oil well deal that was beneficial to House Speaker Jim Wright are successful entrepreneurs with little formal education and longstanding ties to prominent politicians.

The two, Morris and Doug Jaffe, are also old friends of a Wright business partner, George Mallick, a figure in the Wright ethics investigation who was also involved in the oil well deal.

The Jaffes are not active in civic causes here and prefer to operate behind the scenes financing political campaigns and intricate business deals.

They have set up an empire of nearly 60 privately held corporations, and the details of their financial position and the full reach of their investments remain a mystery.

Both Morris D. Jaffe, 66 years old, and Doug, 38, have been subpoenaed to meet here early next week with investigators from the House ethics committee.

Morris Jaffe was a friend of and contributor to President Lyndon B. Johnson and spent at least $9 million in 1962 to save the empire of a Johnson crony, Billie Sol Estes. Mr. Estes was convicted of fraud.

Mr. Jaffe, who has interests in oil, real estate and aerospace, has been dogged by reports of ties to Carlos Marcello, the reputed leader of organized crime in Louisiana. Mr. Jaffe has played down the connection, saying that he only tried to buy land from Mr. Marcello but that the deal collapsed when Mr. Marcello was convicted of assaulting an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Federal Election Commission records disclose no contributions to Mr. Wright in the last four years, but they show that the Jaffes often backed Democratic House and Senate members, giving a total of $4,000 to Representative Henry B. Gonzales of Texas and $3,000 to Representative Les Aspin of Wisconsin. Contributions to Coelho

A Jaffe company provided air travel a year ago for a fund-raiser on behalf of the Valley Education Fund, the political action committee of Representative Tony Coelhoof California. Records also show that Doug Jaffe contributed $806 to Mr. Coelho a month later.

Morris Jaffe raises money for Democrats and is close to prominent Texas politicians, including John S. White, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Doug Jaffe, apparently with the support of his father, arranged the sale of an oil well in Orange County, Tex., in which a blind trust Mr. Wright had set up profited, according to the committee's report. 'Traveled in Highest Circles'

While the elder Mr. Jaffe has not flaunted his relationship with the Speaker, his associates were not surprised that his name had turned up now. A local Democrat says Mr. Wright often travels on a Jaffe plane when he makes a trip to San Antonio from his district in Fort Worth.

Morris Jaffe –

“Morris Douglas Jaffe was born in San Antonio on May 4, 1922. He died peacefully on April 24, 2001, surrounded by his children and grandchildren at the home of his son, Douglas. Jaffe graduated from Jefferson High School in 1940. He attended A&M University and joined the Air Force in 1942, where he attained the rank of Captain and was trained as a test pilot in World War II. After the war, he returned to San Antonio and with partner, David Martin, formed Jaffe & Martin Construction Company which built several thousand homes in San Antonio and sold them to returning veterans. Over the course of his life, Jaffe was a private pilot for the President of Mexico, bought Columbia Bowling Ball Company the first plastic bowling ball company in America, and discovered the St. Joseph oil field in South Texas with fellow oilman, Oscar Wyatt, Jr. In 1954, Jaffe discovered the first uranium field in Texas. He developed and opened Central Park Mall in the mid-1960’s. In the late 60’s and during the 70’s, Jaffe collaborated with friend and baseball legend Mickey Mantle in various business ventures. Also in the late 1950’s and 1960’s he, along with Sol Price, established Fed-Mart, a NASDAQ traded company which was one of the first major discount chains in America. Since the 1980’s, Jaffe worked side-by-side with his eldest son, Douglas, in running Jaffe Group. Together they developed a hush kit for the Boeing 707 and saved the aircraft from extinction after the FAA passed a noise reduction act in 1985. Later, they developed the Super Q, a totally renovated 707 which was sold throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. They also acquired Horseshoe Bay Resort, a development on Lake LBJ near Marble Falls. Alongside U.S. Representative Henry B. Gonzalez, a close friend and confidant, Morris Jaffe received an honorary doctorate of law from St. Mary’s University. He was a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party and a close, personal friend and advisor to three U.S. Presidents. Jaffe is survived by his children, Jenifer Jaffe Gutmann, Judy Jaffe Barnes, Morris Douglas Jaffe, Jr, Jeffery Herrmann Jaffe, Jana Stadler Jaffe, Jolie Michelle Jaffe; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held for immediate family only. Close friends and family are invited to celebrate his life at the home of his son, Douglas, on Thursday from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the CTRC or Hospice San Antonio. Mission Park Funeral Chapels South.”

"The indefatigable Johnson had never ceased pressure on the administration," wrote I.L. "Si" Kenen, the head of AIPAC at the time. As Senate majority leader, Johnson consistently blocked the anti-Israel initiatives of his fellow Democrat, William Fulbright, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Among Johnson's closest advisers during this period were several strong pro-Israel advocates, including Benjamin Cohen (who 30 years earlier was the liaison between Supreme Court justice Louis Brandeis and Chaim Weizmann) and Abe Fortas, the legendary Washington "insider." Johnson's concern for the Jewish people continued through his presidency. Soon after taking office in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Johnson told an Israeli diplomat, "You have lost a very great friend, but you have found a better one."

In 1964, still bothered by his image, he asked his friend Frank Stanton for help, and Stanton dispatched Fred Friendly to advise him. Friendly was clearly there to teach Johnson about television. President Johnson surprised him by demanding that he would join the White House staff: Fred Friendly would become Johnson’s chief intellectual, the domestic version of Mac Bundy; the country needed Fred Friendly. Friendly, despite his own outsized ambitions, knew he was in dangerous waters. He called old friend Ed Murrow, who warned him off: “It’s the worst idea I ever heard—they’ll cut your balls off in four weeks.” So despite further presidential pleas—“Make up your mind, make up your mind, what are you going to do, sit around in New York at some fancy restaurant drinking old-fashioneds and making $100,000 a year, or are you going to help your country?”—Friendly remained in television. And Lyndon Johnson continued his search for someone to transform him on television. Someone who could make him less Texan, more eastern, shrink his nose, and gentle his accent. He could not hire Friendly from CBS, so he eventually hired Kintner from NBC, but his problems remained.

A Senate Rules Committee investigation into the Bobby Baker scandal was indeed moving rapidly to implicate Lyndon Johnson, and on a matter concerning a concurrent scandal and investigation. This was the award of a $7-billion contract for a fighter plane, the TFX, to a General Dynamics plant in Fort Worth. Navy Secretary Fred Korth, a former bank president and a Johnson man, had been forced to resign in October 1963, after reporters discovered that his bank, the Continental National Bank of Fort Worth, was the principal money source for the General Dynamics plant.

On November 22, 1963, the day of the assassination, a closed session of the Senate Rules Committee heard sworn testimony from a Baker business associate, Don Reynolds. Reynolds was telling the committee of a big lobbyists’ sex party in New York, and also of a suitcase he had seen, full of money which Baker described as a $100,000 payoff to Johnson for his role in securing the Fort Worth TFX contract. His testimony was broken off by the news that the President had been shot.

This bit of history indicates that Vice President Lyndon Johnson was involved in a criminal way in the crooked TFX deal that gave Henry Crown’s new company the largest military aircraft contract in U.S. history. As the recipient of a $100,000 payoff, Johnson would have been in a position in which he could be blackmailed by Henry Crown.

Henry Crown’s personal lawyer, Albert E. Jenner, who also served as a director of General Dynamics, was appointed by Lyndon Johnson to the Warren Commission where he was tasked with investigating the evidence of a conspiracy behind Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby. He found none.

QUOTE

On the night before Christmas, 1971, Lyndon Baines Johnson played the most improbable role of his varied and controversial life. Protected from public view behind the gates of his Texas ranch, and no longer suffering the cloying presence of a battalion of White House reporters, Johnson donned a red suit and false beard, climbed aboard a small tractor, and drove to the hangar adjoining his airstrip. Assembled inside were the families of his ranch hands for what had become a traditional ceremony over the years: receiving greetings and gifts from LBJ. This time, they were so stunned at the sight of the former President ho-ho-hoing aboard a chugging tractor that they greeted his arrival with disbelieving silence. Undeterred, Johnson dismounted the tractor and unloaded a bag of toys for the children, sent to him for the occasion by an old friend, New York toy manufacturer Louis Marx, father of Patricia Marx Ellsberg.

That is a starter list. I wonder if I could find hundreds of powerful Zionist Jews around LBJ if I looked hard enough? And all these folks were in direct contact with the leaders of Israel. Which is why it is just nutty to think that Israel would attack an American ship without doing do on the orders of (lunatic) Lyndon Johnson. Our First Jewish President Lyndon Johnson? – an update!!

A few months ago, the Associated Press reported that newly released tapes from US president Lyndon Johnson’s White House office showed LBJ’s “personal and often emotional connection to Israel.” The news agency pointed out that during the Johnson presidency (1963-1969), “the United States became Israel’s chief diplomatic ally and primary arms supplier.”
But the news report does little to reveal the full historical extent of Johnson’s actions on behalf of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.  Most students of the Arab-Israeli conflict can identify Johnson as the president during the 1967 war. But few know about LBJ’s actions to rescue hundreds of endangered Jews during the Holocaust – actions that could have thrown him out of Congress and into jail. Indeed, the title of “Righteous Gentile” is certainly appropriate in the case of the Texan, whose centennial year is being commemorated this year.  Appropriately enough, the annual Jerusalem Conference announced this week that it will honor Johnson.
Historians have revealed that Johnson, while serving as a young congressman in 1938 and 1939, arranged for visas to be supplied to Jews in Warsaw, and oversaw the apparently illegal immigration of hundreds of Jews through the port of Galveston, Texas….
A key resource for uncovering LBJ’s pro-Jewish activity is the unpublished 1989 doctoral thesis by University of Texas student Louis Gomolak, “Prologue: LBJ’s Foreign Affairs Background, 1908-1948.” Johnson’s activities were confirmed by other historians in interviews with his wife, family members and political associates.
Research into Johnson’s personal history indicates that he inherited his concern for the Jewish people from his family. His aunt Jessie Johnson Hatcher, a major influence on LBJ, was a member of the Zionist Organization of America. According to Gomolak, Aunt Jessie had nurtured LBJ’s commitment to befriending Jews for 50 years. As young boy, Lyndon watched his politically active grandfather “Big Sam” and father “Little Sam” seek clemency for Leo Frank, the Jewish victim of a blood libel in Atlanta.  Frank was lynched by a mob in 1915, and the Ku Klux Klan in Texas threatened to kill the Johnsons. The Johnsons later told friends that Lyndon’s family hid in their cellar while his father and uncles stood guard with shotguns on their porch in case of KKK attacks. Johnson’s speech writer later stated, “Johnson often cited Leo Frank’s lynching as the source of his opposition to both anti-Semitism and isolationism.”
Already in 1934 – four years before Chamberlain’s Munich sellout to Hitler – Johnson was keenly alert to the dangers of Nazism and presented a book of essays, ‘Nazism: An Assault on Civilization’, to the 21-year-old woman he was courting, Claudia Taylor – later known as “Lady Bird” Johnson. It was an incredible engagement present.
FIVE DAYS after taking office in 1937, LBJ broke with the “Dixiecrats” and supported an immigration bill that would naturalize illegal aliens, mostly Jews from Lithuania and Poland. In 1938, Johnson was told of a young Austrian Jewish musician who was about to be deported from the United States. With an element of subterfuge, LBJ sent him to the US Consulate in Havana to obtain a residency permit. Erich Leinsdorf, the world famous musician and conductor, credited LBJ for saving his live.
That same year, LBJ warned Jewish friend, Jim Novy, that European Jews faced annihilation. “Get as many Jewish people as possible out of Germany and Poland,” were Johnson’s instructions. Somehow, Johnson provided him with a pile of signed immigration papers that were used to get 42 Jews out of Warsaw.  But that wasn’t enough. According to historian James M. Smallwood, Congressman Johnson used legal and sometimes illegal methods to smuggle “hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port.  Enough money could buy false passports and fake visas in Cuba, Mexico and other Latin American countries. Johnson smuggled boatloads and planeloads of Jews into Texas. He hid them in the Texas National Youth Administration. Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more.”
During World War II Johnson joined Novy at a small Austin gathering to sell $65,000 in war bonds. According to Gomolak, Novy and Johnson then raised a very “substantial sum for arms for Jewish underground fighters in Palestine.” One source cited by the historian reports that “Novy and Johnson had been secretly shipping heavy crates labeled ‘Texas Grapefruit’ – but containing arms – to Jewish underground ‘freedom fighters’ in Palestine.”
ON JUNE 4, 1945, Johnson visited Dachau. According to Smallwood, Lady Bird later recalled that when her husband returned home, “he was still shaken, stunned, terrorized, and bursting with an overpowering revulsion and incredulous horror at what he had seen.”
A decade later while serving in the Senate, Johnson blocked the Eisenhower administration’s attempts to apply sanctions against Israel following the 1956 Sinai Campaign. “The indefatigable Johnson had never ceased pressure on the administration,” wrote I.L. “Si” Kenen, the head of AIPAC at the time.  As Senate majority leader, Johnson consistently blocked the anti-Israel initiatives of his fellow Democrat, William Fulbright, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Among Johnson’s closest advisers during this period were several strong pro-Israel advocates, including Benjamin Cohen (who 30 years earlier was the liaison between Supreme Court justice Louis Brandeis and Chaim Weizmann) and Abe Fortas, the legendary Washington “insider.”
Johnson’s concern for the Jewish people continued through his presidency. Soon after taking office in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Johnson told an Israeli diplomat, “You have lost a very great friend, but you have found a better one.”  Just one month after succeeding Kennedy, LBJ attended the December 1963 dedication of the Agudas Achim Synagogue in Austin. Novy opened the ceremony by saying to Johnson, “We can’t thank him enough for all those Jews he got out of Germany during the days of Hitler.”  Lady Bird would later describe the day, according to Gomolak: “Person after person plucked at my sleeve and said, ‘I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for him. He helped me get out.’” Lady Bird elaborated, “Jews had been woven into the warp and woof of all [Lyndon's] years.”
The PRELUDE to the 1967 war was a terrifying period for Israel, with the US State Department led by the historically unfriendly Dean Rusk urging an evenhanded policy despite Arab threats and acts of aggression. Johnson held no such illusions. After the war he placed
the blame firmly on Egypt: “If a single act of folly was more responsible for this explosion than any other, it was the arbitrary and dangerous announced decision [by Egypt that the Strait of Tiran would be closed [to Israeli ships and Israeli-bound cargo].”
Kennedy was the first president to approve the sale of defensive US weapons to Israel, specifically Hawk anti-aircraft missiles. But Johnson approved tanks and fighter jets, all vital after the 1967 war when France imposed a freeze on sales to Israel. Yehuda Avner recently
described on these pages prime minister Levi Eshkol’s successful appeal for these weapons on a visit to the LBJ ranch.  Israel won the 1967 war, and Johnson worked to make sure it also won the peace. “I sure as hell want to be careful and not run out on little Israel,” Johnson said in a March 1968 conversation with his ambassador to the United Nations, Arthur Goldberg, according to White House tapes recently released.
Soon after the 1967 war, Soviet premier Aleksei Kosygin asked Johnson at the Glassboro Summit why the US supported Israel when there were 80 million Arabs and only three million Israelis. “Because it is a right thing to do,” responded the straight-shooting Texan.
The crafting of UN Resolution 242 in November 1967 was done under Johnson’s scrutiny. The call for “secure and recognized boundaries” was critical. The American and British drafters of the resolution opposed Israel returning all the territories captured in the war. In September 1968, Johnson explained, “We are not the ones to say where other nations should draw lines between them that will assure each the greatest security. It is clear, however, that a return to the  situation of 4 June 1967 will not bring peace. There must be secure and there must be recognized borders. Some such lines must be agreed to by the neighbors involved.”  Goldberg later noted, “Resolution 242 in no way refers to Jerusalem, and this omission was deliberate.” This historic diplomacy was conducted under Johnson’s stewardship, as Goldberg related in oral history to the Johnson Library. “I must say for Johnson,” Goldberg stated. “He gave me great personal support.”
Robert David Johnson, a professor of history at Brooklyn College, recently wrote in The New York Sun, Johnson’s policies stemmed more from personal concerns – his friendship with leading Zionists, his belief that America had a moral obligation to bolster Israeli security and his conception of Israel as a frontier land much like his home state of Texas. His personal concerns led him to intervene when he felt that the State or Defense departments had insufficiently appreciated Israel’s diplomatic or military needs.”
President Johnson firmly pointed American policy in a pro-Israel direction. In a historical context, the American emergency airlift to Israel in 1973, the constant diplomatic support, the economic and military assistance and the strategic bonds between the two countries can all be credited to the seeds planted by LBJ.
ADDITONAL NOTE:
Lyndon Johnson’s maternal ancestors, the Huffmans, apparently migrated to Frederick, Maryland from Germany sometime in the mid-eighteenth century.  Later they moved to Bourbon, Kentucky and eventually settled in Texas in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

According to Jewish law, if a person’s mother is Jewish, then that person is automatically Jewish, regardless of the father’s ethnicity or religion.  The facts indicate that both of Lyndon Johnson’s great-grandparents, on the maternal side, were Jewish.
These were the grandparents of Lyndon’s mother, Rebecca Baines. Their names were John S. Huffman and Mary Elizabeth Perrin.  John Huffman’s mother was Suzanne Ament, a common Jewish name. Perrin is also a common Jewish name.
Huffman and Perrin had a daughter, Ruth Ament Huffman, who married Joseph Baines and together they had a daughter, Rebekah Baines, Lyndon Johnson’s mother. The line of Jewish mothers can be traced back three generations in Lyndon Johnson’s family tree. There is little doubt that he was Jewish.

Lyndon Johnson (1963-1968)

Johnson with Yitzhak Rabin (Photo Israeli GPO)

"[The United States and Israel] share many common objectives ... chief of which is the building of a better world in which every nation can develop its resources and develop them in freedom and peace."
(Remarks Welcoming Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, June 1, 1964)

"Our society is illuminated by the spiritual insights of the Hebrew prophets. America and Israel have a common love of human freedom and they have a common faith in a democratic way of life ... Most if not all of you have very deep ties with the land and with the people of Israel, as I do, for my Christian faith sprang from yours .... the Bible stories are woven into my childhood memories as the gallant struggle of modern Jews to be free of persecution is also woven into our souls."
       (Speech before B'nai B'rith)

"I may not worry as much as Prime Minister Eshkol does about Israel, but I worry as deeply."
(Conversation with Israeli Ambassador Harman, February 7, 1968)

When Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin asked Johnson why the United States supports Israel when there are 80 million Arabs and only three million Israelis, the President replied simply: “Because it is right.”

Title of the actual article: Why is Morris Jaffe Interesting?

John Delane Williams

Morris Jaffe is a name that JFK assassination researchers haven’t encountered on a daily basis. Madeleine Brown, in her interview with this writer (1), indicated, that in all of the previous times she’d been interviewed, no one had ever asked about Jaffe before. Given the coincidences of Jaffe’s known activities, I find that curious.

Morris Douglas Jaffe, to begin with, backed Johnson for the Democratic nomination for President in 1960. Jaffe was in Los Angeles “… to lay his money on the line. An old time San Antonio newspaperman came home admitting that Jaffe not only seemed to be the “money” man but the brains and trouble-shooter and smart beyond imagination, the most effective man behind Lyndon B. Johnson.” (2).

Jaffe was the person who bought all of the holdings of Billie Sol Estes when Estes declared bankruptcy, although Jaffe did not get Estes’ holdings immediately. J.C. Williamson moved at once after Estes’ bankruptcy to regain Estes’ property, which was blocked by the bankruptcy judge, Ewing Thomason, who incidentally, was a good friend of Lyndon Johnson. (3) In June, 1963, Jaffe paid Williamson only the outstanding amount on Williamson’s loan, $418,000, to acquire Williamson’s holdings, who by that time had been converted to the political conservative cause. (4). Jaffe was said to have offered $7 million for Estes’s vast holdings. Actually, Jaffe, who preferred not to risk a single red cent, agreed to pay perhaps as little as $100,000. (5). “The conclusion is inescapable that the Johnson-controlled political machine in Texas designedly set the stage for Jaffe’s takeover, as the cleanup was without financial risk and potentially very good.” (6).

Apparently, Jaffe was in and Estes was out. Not only did Johnson not help Estes retain his holdings, it appeared (at least to Estes) that he was getting poor legal representation from John Cofer; Cofer had defended Johnson in the infamous box 13 case, where a delay in reporting results from one precinct was withheld until they knew how many dead people and other nonvoters had to vote for LBJ for him to win the Democratic party’s nomination for the Senate in 1948. (7) Cofer also got Mac Wallace (who was said to be LBJ’s henchman) off with a five year probation after being convicted of first degree murder. Estes was aware that Cofer was botching his defense, but Estes was not allowed to fire Cofer. It was feared that an independent counsel might implicate Johnson.(8)

Estes had a special relationship with Lyndon Johnson, then Vice-President, who had previously served in the US House (1937-1949) and US Senate (1949-1961). An integral part of that relationship was supplying LBJ with bagloads of money. On one occasion, Estes was slow in getting a promised $500,000 to LBJ. LBJ called Estes before dawn regarding the “donation”. Estes replied,”Do you know what time it is?”, to which Johnson bellowed, “Hell, I didn’t call you to find out what time it is! I called to find where the cash is. I want you to get out to the fucking airport and get the goddamn cash on its way now!” (9)

Estes was heard to say, “Lyndon would do anything for you he could, if  you paid him enough.” (10). In a letter from Douglas Caddy, the lawyer for Estes in 1984, to Steven S. Trott, U.S. Department of Justice, a hint at the enormity of Estes’ money transfers to Johnson is given: “Mr. Estes is willing to disclose illegal payoff schemes, in which he collected and passed on to Cliff Carter and LBJ millions of dollars”. (11)

Concurrently, Jaffe was also a close confidante of LBJ, and presumably a similar arrangement would have been in place to supply LBJ with money; Jaffe seemed to be a hand picked replacement for Estes. With Jaffe assuming Estes’ holdings, it seems likely that Johnson would continue to accept gratuities, at an increased level, from Jaffe. Indeed, Jaffe’s reasons for being handpicked may relate to his already having learned that being generous to Lyndon could portend greater payoffs for Jaffe. While the Estes arrangements are relatively well known and a part of the public record, Jaffe was much more a behind the scenes player, and his activities are far less known. Jaffe died April 24, 2001 in San Antonio. (12)

Jaffe’s Earlier Adult Years

Jaffe was born in San Antonio of Jewish-Hispanic heritage and became an aircraft engineering officer during World War II. Jaffe and a friend, David P. Martin, began a construction company (Jaffe and Martin Builders). They built barracks at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. It was determined that Jaffe had wined and dined the civil engineer named McLain, who was hired by the government to insure the job was done to specifications. An inquiry was begun to investigate shoddy workmanship, but the investigation ended when McLain was transferred.

A friend of Jaffe’s, Lieutenant Colonel Roger Zeller, was allowed to jump over several hundred full colonels to the rank of Brigadier General, and get a plum transfer to the Pentagon. With influence in the Pentagon and with Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson, “…Jaffe really hit his stride.” (13) Continuing on at Lackland, Jaffe built a skating rink, which he could not own, because it was on government ground, costing $260,000, but he was given a ten year period to “recoup” his costs.

Jaffe used his influence to require that each airman in basic training skate at least one hour a week. The director of basic training, Colonel James A. Smyrl, was brought under fire because he refused to go along. It took some time for Smyrl to save his military career; other Lackland officials would eventually suffer either resignation or reassignment. And Jaffe? He would sell his interest to a Sam Katz in January, 1959 and walk away unscathed, at a good profit.

Jaffe also found South Texas uranium deposits, which, fortunately for him, were appraised as being quite rich in uranium by the Atomic Energy Commission. Jaffe picked up options on a large amount of acreage, inducing the government to finance a giant processing plant. He then sold his leases and options at top dollar, shortly before the industry went bust. It is as if he were in training to take over Billie Sol’s holdings. (14)

The death of two sisters in Mexico

In 1976, Madeleine Brown received a telephone call from Sam Park, a multimillionaire bachelor from Harris County at his South Texas ranch. He called regarding the collapse of the Salinas family  bank in South Texas. The bank had taken down several celebrities with them, including John Connally, Sammy Davis Jr. and Lt. Governor Ben Barnes. Connally and Barnes filed for bankruptcy. Sam told Madeleine, “It sure looks like ol’ Lyndon’s carpetbagger, Morris Jaffe, has done in Steve’s pretty little girlfriend, Beth Horstmann, and her sister, Alex Short.” (15). Sam continued, “It was Jaffe, who introduced Alex Short to Salinas, wasn’t it? The girls burned to death in a plane crash with $500,000 that the paper says is missing from the bank.” (16)

Steve (who used the last name of Brown) was Madeleine’s son with Lyndon who had dated Beth when they were both in high school. Alex had worked for Jaffe for ten years. The girls died in the crash in Northern Mexico near H.L. Hunt’s retreat. Back in 1976 accounts were insured for much less than today, perhaps as little as $10,000. Thus, the girls stood to lose most of their account if they did not withdraw the money before the bank went into receivership.

The girls were likely advised to withdraw the money immediately. One might conjecture that the money was not on board the plane when it went down. One might also conjecture that Sam Park surmised that Jaffe was responsible for events that followed, including responsibility for the sister’s deaths.

Other Jaffe misadventures

Jaffe was said to be involved with his son, Morris Douglas Jaffe, Jr. in offering a $1 million bribe to fix a jury. (17) Jaffe Sr. also was said to have written two checks to Linda Medlar, a former lover of Henry Cisneros, one-time Secretary of Housing in Bill Clinton’s Cabinet. The government pursued Cisneros on tax evasion. (18) This pursuit was probably a ploy to force Cisneros’ resignation. On the other side of the coin, Jaffe was a co-owner of Fed-Mart, an early discount chain. Sam Walton sought Jaffe’s advice about starting his own discount chain, Wal-Mart. (19)

Morris Jaffe’s father-in-law was Sam Bloom (20). Bloom owned his own advertising agency bearing Bloom’s name. (21) Bloom was a member of the Dallas Citizens Council and was instrumental in getting the business community to accept integration. His basis of argument was that integration was “good business”. To continue segregation was to court disaster. Bloom produced a movie and strategized on getting integration accepted.  The Zodiac Cafe in the Nieman-Marcus store was smoothly integrated. On an assigned day, 2 Black Men and 2 Black women, with no fanfare, sat down and had lunch.

The change process was smoothly handled. Not a single account was lost by Niemann-Marcus. Bloom was a pragmatist who expended his energies getting things done, rather than talking about them. He knew his fellow business owners were oriented to doing things that made them popular rather than unpopular. His task was to take the unpopular idea and turn it into a popular project. Bloom was a leader in a town that had no shakers (22).

Bloom was placed in charge of the reception in Dallas for President Kennedy’s visit. The idea was to muzzle the right wing and minimize protests. Until the moment JFK was shot, the plan seemed to be succeeding to the point that Nell Connally said to JFK, “Well you certainly can’t say the people of Dallas are against you today”. (23) Bloom was waiting at The Trade Mart along with other dignitaries when Kennedy was assassinated.

Bloom was enlisted to handle public relations for Judge Joe Brown for the Jack Ruby trial. Ruby’s lawyer, Melvin Belli, was trying to get a change of venue, based on the difficulty of getting a fair trial in Dallas. Belli was not successful in his attempt.

Belli became exasperated by Bloom, who he saw as interfering in his attempt at change of venue; he was unclear about Bloom’s role, though he sensed the role as fitting someone else’s agenda. (24)  Belli was aware that citizens councils were a Southern institution that existed in the former confederate states. Their agendas addressed states rights, and were conservative White organizations that reinforced the status quo. (25).

A member of the citizens council in Quitman, Georgia was Joseph Milteer, who told of the upcoming JFK assassination  on November 9, 1963 to Willie Somersett, an FBI informant.  A picture of a man said to be Milteer was taken in front of the School Book Depository at the time of the assassination. See Groden (26) for a text of Milteer’s conversation with Somersett, and the picture of Milteer at the assassination. Yet another person associated with the assassination and the Citizens Council was General Edwin A. Walker, scheduled to give an address to The Citizens Council of Louisiana on the day of the assassination. (27)

An interpretation of Bloom’s role with the Ruby trial was to prove to the world that Dallas was innocent in the assassination of John Kennedy. This might be seen as motivated by Dallasites to remove any negativeness towards Dallas, particularly as it might relate to any loss of revenue to business persons in the city. If that role conflicted with Belli’s sense that Ruby couldn’t get a fair trial in Dallas, so be it.

Additionally, Elizabeth Forsling Harris, an employee at Bloom’s advertising business, worked with Jack Puterbaugh in planning JFK’s visit to Dallas. Puterbaugh made the decision to go through Dealey Plaza. Harris was the Dallas contact with the Washington planners  for the fated visit. (28). Bill Moyers, then a presidential assistant, directed Harris to publish the motorcade route. (29)

LBJ’s Jewish mafia connections: http://www.bollyn.com/political-assassinations/

NEW YEAR'S DAY 1960 - SEN. LYNDON B. JOHNSON with Chicago Democratic Party boss Jacob Arvey at a party function in Chicago, January 1, 1960, one day after Arvey's partner Henry Crown merged his Chicago company with General Dynamics of Texas. Arvey's criminal/political machine was instrumental in getting John F. Kennedy elected - with Vice President Lyndon Johnson attached. Was Kennedy used as a Trojan Horse to get Johnson, an ardent Zionist and probable crypto-Jew, into the White House?

Jake Arvey, Henry Crown, and the Supermob had aligned themselves closely with Lyndon B. Johnson long before he became Vice President with the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960.  Senator Johnson, for example, was the guest of honor at the grand opening of the mob-run Stardust casino in Las Vegas on July 2, 1958.  Johnny Rosselli, named by self-confessed Kennedy assassin James Files as one of the members of his three-man team of assassins in Dallas, was a key player in the Stardust operation. Rosselli claimed he was getting $15,000 to $20,000 per month from the money being skimmed from the Stardust.

According to James Files' testimony, Johnny Rosselli decided not to be a shooter on November 22, 1963, because he had been told that they were to be part of an anti-assassination action - not an assassination. In any case, the Rosselli-Nicoletti-Files team was at the "working level" of the JFK assassination, which is to say that they were being managed by higher-level criminals.

Senator Lyndon Johnson and his confidante Bobby Baker had very close ties to the Jewish mob, according to Michael Newton, author ofMr. Mob: The Life and Crimes of Moe Dalitz:

Lyndon Johnson served as U.S. Senate majority leader from 1955 until he became Vice President in 1961. Two years before that promotion, Johnson was a guest of honor at the Stardust’s grand opening. LBJ confidante Robert “Bobby” Baker forged a close link to the Mob through his involvement in Dominican casinos and through friendship with a cast of characters including Meyer Lansky, Sam Cohen, Ed Levinson, and Miami-Vegas front man Benjamin Sigelbaum.

Most importantly, Lyndon Johnson was an active Zionist agent who had played a key role, as a new congressman, in assisting the B’nai B’rith in their illegal immigration scheme to bring Polish Jews to Texas in the 1930s.  Although he was a member of Congress, Johnson was also reportedly involved in sending weapons to Jewish forces in Palestine in the 1940s - illegally.

Senator Johnson was closely aligned with Henry Crown, who merged his Chicago company, Material Service Corp., with Texas-based General Dynamics on December 31, 1959.  The following day, January 1, 1960, Senator Johnson attended a Democratic function in Chicago where he sat next to Henry Crown’s senior partner-in-crime, Jake Arvey.

In 1962, Vice President Johnson played a key role in getting a $6.5 billion contract to produce a military fighter (TFX/F-111) for Henry Crown’s Fort Worth-based General Dynamics, which was on the verge of bankruptcy.  Johnson reportedly received a $100,000 payoff for his help in getting the contract that saved Crown’s new company, asDeep Politics explains:

On November 22, 1963, the day of the assassination, a closed session of the Senate Rules Committee heard sworn testimony from a Baker business associate, Don Reynolds. Reynolds was telling the committee of a big lobbyists' sex party in New York, and also of a suitcase he had seen, full of money which Baker described as a $100,000 payoff to Johnson for his role in securing the Fort Worth TFX contract. His testimony was broken off by the news that the President had been shot.

Jack Ruby’s murder to silence Lee Harvey Oswald was the linchpin in the cover-up of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.  Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach at the Department of Justice and J. Edgar Hoover were evidently part of a criminal conspiracy to portray Oswald as a lone gunman from the outset.  They also conspired to conceal Jack Ruby’s connections to Jake Arvey and the Jewish mob of Chicago. Their cover-up required a massive falsification of the evidence.

Katzenbach, a crypto-Jew who also had close ties to the international order of Zionist Freemasons, the B'nai B'rith, played the same key role in the JFK cover-up at the Department of Justice

Johnson had been involved in illegal Zionist activities since the 1930s and had a "special relationship" with Israeli president Levi Eshkol, seen here at Johnson's ranch in 1966.

Lyndon B. Johnson, who became the president on the day Kennedy died, was an ardent Zionist and devoted supporter of the state of Israel.  His aunt Jessie Johnson Hatcher, who was a major influence on Lyndon, was a member of the Zionist Organization of America. While it seems very likely that his family was in fact Jewish (i.e.Crypto-Jews), there is absolutely no question that Lyndon Johnson was a high-level Zionist who had been involved for decades with the Jewish Freemasonic organization, the International Order of the B'nai B'rith, in the illegal immigration of Jews from Poland to Galveston. The smuggling operation of Jews to Texas in which LBJ was involved from 1937 is known as "Operation Texas".

The B'nai B'rith was behind the plan to bring Jews from Poland to Texas.  Lyndon Johnson, as a new congressman, was a key player in this operation and broke the law to facilitate the illegal immigration scheme.

Historians have revealed that Johnson, while serving as a young congressman in 1938 and 1939, arranged for visas to be supplied to Jews in Warsaw, and oversaw the apparently illegal immigration of hundreds of Jews through the port of Galveston, Texas. In this operation Johnson was working with the Zionist elders of the B'nai B'rith, not through normal government offices.

When he became a Congressman in 1937, Lyndon Johnson began using legal and sometimes illegal methods to smuggle "hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port. Enough money could buy false passports and fake visas in Cuba, Mexico and other Latin American countries.... Johnson smuggled boatloads and planeloads of Jews into Texas. He hid them in the Texas National Youth Administration... Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more," according to historian James M. Smallwood.

James Smallwood said, "It is correct that Johnson did not risk his life, but he committed illegal acts to save the Jews. It can be proved that LBJ saved some 42 from the Nazis. Indirect evidence says he probably saved about 400. From my research, I agree with the larger number. However, there are problems, since much of what went on was illegal and Johnson knew better than to leave a paper trail."

According to Louis Gomolak's thesis, "Prologue: LBJ's Foreign Affairs Background, 1908-1948," Johnson and his friend Jim Lovy raised a very "substantial sum for arms for Jewish underground fighters in Palestine." One source cited by the historian reports that "[Jim] Novy and Johnson had been secretly shipping heavy crates labeled 'Texas Grapefruit' - but containing arms - to Jewish underground 'freedom fighters' in Palestine."

Lyndon Johnson's illegal activities in support of the Zionist forces in Palestine is something he had in common with Col. Henry Crown, the Zionist Jew from Chicago who became the largest shareholder of General Dynamics (of Fort Worth) in 1959.  Henry Crown had purchased an entire aircraft manufacturing plant, probably in Texas in the early 1950s, which was crated up and shipped to Israel in violation of U.S. law.

From the earliest days of his political career Lyndon Johnson was clearly working with and for the B'nai B'rith and the Zionist mobsters who were bringing Polish Jews to Texas and later sending U.S. weapons - illegally - to Zionist forces in Palestine. Johnson's history as a high-level Zionist agent needs to be taken into consideration when looking at his role in the cover-up of the evidence of a conspiracy to kill President Kennedy and the cover-up of the murderous Israeli attack on the USS Liberty in 1967.

President Lyndon Johnson was the official in the highest position to mastermind the JFK cover-up and the person who appointed the Warren Commission.  It is important to realize that Johnson was an active and dedicated Zionist agent who set the stage for the assassination as Vice President and then masterminded the cover-up as the new president.

Lyndon Johnson and the Zionist-controlled media have covered-up the truth of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy because it was a crime that was carried out by the Zionist criminal network, which took power in the coup d'etat in Dallas in November 1963 and which has been in power ever since. The role of the Zionist-controlled media is to keep the population from realizing that a criminal regime of Zionist agents controls their government.

Jack Fleischer coined NFL’s ‘honor America’ phrase for national anthem

By PBDN

Jack Fleischer, a longtime Palm Beach resident and standout in sportwriting and politics, died Friday, July 31, 2015, in West Palm Beach. He was 98.

In 1970, Mr. Fleischer coined the National Football League phrase “and now to honor America” before the playing of the national anthem as a reminder to fans to rise with respect. The phrase has been used at every Super Bowl since and has also been adopted by Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and National Basketball Association for use at their games.

Mr. Fleischer was born March 21, 1917, in Bridgeport, Conn., the son of Julius and Matilda Fleischer. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1940.

He moved to Palm Beach in 1979 after spending 20 years in Washington, D.C., where he combined careers in sports and politics.

Mr. Fleischer was news director for vice presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson at LBJ’s Washington headquarters during the 1960 campaign and later became executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. In that capacity, Mr. Fleischer was the architect of the successful 1962 senatorial campaign.

He was public relations director of the Washington Redskins under Coach George Allen in 1977 and the author of two books on professional football, My Sunday Best and Pro Football At Its Best.

For many years, Mr. Fleischer served as a member of the blue-ribbon committee that makes the annual selection of the National Football League Foundation’s High School Coach of the Year award.

In 2002, he was elected to the B’nai Brith Sports Hall of Fame. He also was a supporter of the Jewish National Fund and the Jewish Federation.

Mr. Fleischer started a 25-year career in journalism at age 13 as high school sports reporter for the Bridgeport Post. He later worked for Scripps Howard newspapers in Columbus, Ohio, and Memphis, Tenn.

During World War II, he served 43 months in the Army Air Force, and while stationed at Sioux Falls, S.D., he was editor of the air base newspaper.

He was a freelance reporter for NBC Radio Sports, and for many years covered the annual National Football League owners’ meeting for the network. He was a member of the Pro Football Writers of America.

In Palm Beach, he was a founding member of the board of directors of the Variety Club Children’s charity.

Burial took place Tuesday at Ahavath Achim Cemetery, Fairfield. Arrangements were handled by Abraham Green Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to Palm Beach Synagogue, 120 N. County Road, Palm Beach, FL 33480.

Trump and Clinton Connections to LBJ and the USS Liberty http://thearabdailynews.com/2016/10/08/trump-and-clinton-connections-to-lbj-and-the-uss-liberty/

In “GUILT BY ASSOCIATION: How DECEPTION and SELF-DECEIT Took America to WAR”, author Jeff Gates who served seven years as counsel to the U.S. Committee on Finance, wrote about the ‘passionate attachment’ of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and Mathilde Krim.

Mathilde was young, blond, Italian and an Irgun operative.

The Irgun were the Zionist terrorist network led by Menachem Begin who emerged as Likud Party Prime Minister in 1977.

With and without her husband, Mathilde Krim was a frequent guest at the LBJ Ranch and the White House.

Jeff Gates wrote: “On the night that the Six-Day Land Grab began, Mathilde was enjoying a sleepover in the Johnson White House. But for that Zionist aggression, would Israel have been able to live peacefully with its neighbors? Israel and its supporters staged an elaborate charade to recast this provocation as defensive. That ruse included the cover-up of an Israeli assault on the U.S.S. Liberty that killed 34 Americans and left 175 wounded.”

The “5 Towns Jewish Times” is a website by an Orthodox Jewish community “committed to address all matters of note from a position of intelligence, integrity, and accuracy; and to report difficult social, political, and religious issues from all viewpoints without bias, whitewashing, or journalistic oversimplification.”

The following is excerpted from a 2013 “5 Towns Jewish Times article titled, “Our First Jewish President Lyndon Johnson? –An update!” by Morrsi Smith

The Associated Press reported that newly released tapes from US president Lyndon Johnson’s White House office showed LBJ’s “personal and often emotional connection to Israel.” The news agency pointed out that during the Johnson presidency (1963-1969), “the United States became Israel’s chief diplomatic ally and primary arms supplier.”

Research into Johnson’s personal history indicates that he inherited his concern for the Jewish people from his family. His aunt Jessie Johnson Hatcher, a major influence on LBJ, was a member of the Zionist Organization of America.

ON JUNE 4, 1945, Johnson visited Dachau…Lady Bird later recalled that when her husband returned home, “he was still shaken, stunned, terrorized, and bursting with an overpowering revulsion and incredulous horror at what he had seen.”

A decade later while serving in the Senate, Johnson blocked the Eisenhower administration’s attempts to apply sanctions against Israel following the 1956 Sinai Campaign.

As Senate majority leader, Johnson consistently blocked the anti-Israel initiatives of his fellow Democrat, William Fulbright, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“The indefatigable Johnson had never ceased pressure on the administration,” wrote I.L. “Si” Kenen, the head of AIPAC at the time.

Johnson’s concern for the Jewish people continued through his presidency. Soon after taking office in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Johnson told an Israeli diplomat, “You have lost a very great friend, but you have found a better one.”

Kennedy was the first president to approve the sale of defensive US weapons to Israel, specifically Hawk anti-aircraft missiles. But Johnson approved tanks and fighter jets, all vital after the 1967 war when France imposed a freeze on sales to Israel…

“I sure as hell want to be careful and not run out on little Israel,” Johnson said in a March 1968 conversation with his ambassador to the United Nations, Arthur Goldberg, according to White House tapes recently released…

Robert David Johnson, a professor of history at Brooklyn College, recently wrote in The New York Sun, Johnson’s policies stemmed more from personal concerns – “his friendship with leading Zionists, his belief that America had a moral obligation to bolster Israeli security and his conception of Israel as a frontier land much like his home state of Texas.

George Ball was undersecretary of State under JFK and LBJ who not only called for an early end to America’s War on Vietnam, he also believed our policy of underwriting all of Israel’s actions in the Middle East was detrimental to America’s interests. In Ball’s last book, “The Passionate Attachment: America’s Involvement with Israel” he writes:

The LIBERTY’S presence and function were known to Israel’s leaders. They presumably thought it vital that the LIBERTY be prevented from informing Washington of their intention to violate any cease-fire before they had completed their occupation of the Golan.

The ultimate lesson of the LIBERTY attack had far more effect on policy in Israel than in America. Israel’s leaders concluded that nothing they might do would offend the Americans to the point of reprisal.

If America’s leaders did not have the courage to punish Israel for the blatant murder of American citizens, it seemed clear that their American friends would let them get away with almost anything.

Israel paid minimal compensation to the families of the USS Liberty crew and six million for damages to the spy ship, which in fact should have exceeded 40 million.

Israel has never acknowledged that the attack was premeditated but instead blamed the victims for being in international waters.

Admiral Moorer, General Raymond Davis, Rear Admiral Staring, Ambassador James Akins and other high ranking officials have stated the attack on the USS Liberty was deliberate. They all asked for a new Court of Inquiry be convened by the Department of the Navy with Congressional oversight, to thoroughly investigate the attack on the USS LIBERTY, which is the only way justice can be rendered to the survivors. On 16 January 2004, Admiral Moorer wrote for the Stars and Stripes:

There is compelling evidence that Israel’s attack was a deliberate attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire crew. In attacking the USS Liberty, Israel committed acts of murder against U.S. servicemen and an act of war against the United States.

Following Israel’s 8 June 1967 attack on the USS Liberty, Israel has received an ever-increasing portion of USA foreign aid and military budgets because it is the ‘western pillar’ of the USA strategic alliance against Soviet incursion into the Middle East…

LYNDON JOHNSON AND JAMES ANGLETON —THE CRYPTO JEWS WHO RULED AMERICA

Lyndon Johnson and the Kennedys hated each other. So why was LBJ even put on the 1960 Demo ticket in first place? The old wive’s tale is that it was to balance the ticket and win the electoral votes of Texas. The reality is that JFK was set to pick US Senator StuartSymington of Missouri and had already had a deal with Symington to be VP that was “signed, sealed & delivered” according to Symington’s campaign manager Clark Clifford.

Then something strange happened on the night of July 13, 1960, in Los Angeles . According to Evelyn Lincoln, JFK’s longtime secretary, LBJ and Sam Rayburn were using some of Hoovers blackmail information on John Kennedy to force JFK to put Johnson on the ticket in a hostile takeover of the vice presidency. LBJ & Hoover were very close and literally neighbors for 19 years in Washington, DC, from 1943-1961. Both men were also plugged in socially and professionally to Texas oil executives .

Lyndon Johnson’s maternal ancestors, the Huffmans , apparently migrated to Frederick, Maryland from Germany sometime in the mid-eighteenth century.  Later they moved to Bourbon, Kentucky and eventually settled in Texas in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

According to Jewish law, if a person’s mother is Jewish, then that person is automatically Jewish, regardless of the father’s ethnicity or religion.  The facts indicate that both of Lyndon Johnson’s great-grandparents, on the maternal side, were Jewish .

Mother: Rebekah Baines (married Sam Johnson, Lyndon’s father)
Maternal grandparents: Ruth Ament Huffman and Joseph Baines
Maternal greatgrandparents (parents of Ruth Huffman): Mary Elizabeth Perrinand John S. Huffman, III

Lyndon Johnson’s wife, Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson (aka, “Lady Bird”) is apparently a Sephardic Jew of Mexican origin. Although her facial features are consistent with Semitic origin, that alone is not definitive proof. Claudia’s mother, Minnie Lee Pattillo, was likely a Sephardic Jew from Mexico. Pattillo is a common Spanish/Mexican name;

Historians have revealed that Johnson, while serving as a young congressman in 1938 and 1939 , arranged for visas to be supplied to Jews in Warsaw, and oversaw the apparently illegal immigration of hundreds of Jews through the port of Galveston, Texas….

Research into Johnson’s personal history indicates that he inherited his concern for the Jewish people from hisfamily.

His aunt Jessie Johnson Hatcher , a major influence on LBJ, was a member of the Zionist Organization of America. According to Gomolak, Aunt Jessie had nurtured LBJ’s commitment to befriending Jews for 50 years. As young boy, Lyndon watched his politically active grandfather “Big Sam” and father “Little Sam” seek clemency for Leo Frank , the Jewish victim of a blood libel in Atlanta(or the Jew pedophile murderer) depending on how you view it  .  Frank was lynched by a mob in 1915, and the Ku Klux Klan in Texas threatened to kill the Johnsons . ( Obviously the Klan knew more about the “Johnsons” then the rest of America did )

Already in 1934 – Johnson was keenly alert to the dangers of Nazism and presented a book of essays, ‘Nazism: An Assault on Civilization’, to the 21-year-old woman he was courting, Claudia Taylor – later known as “Lady Bird” Johnson. FIVE DAYS after taking office in 1937LBJ broke with the “Dixiecrats” and supported an immigration billthat would naturalize illegal aliens, mostly Jews from Lithuania and Poland .

That same year, LBJ warned Jewish friend, Jim Novy, that European Jews faced annihilation . According to historian James M. Smallwood, Congressman Johnson used legal and sometimes illegal methods to smuggle “hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port. He hid them in the Texas National Youth Administration. Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more.”

During World War II Johnson joined Novy at a small Austin gathering to sell $65,000 in war bonds. According to Gomolak, Novy and Johnson then raised a very “substantial sum for arms for Jewish underground fighters in Palestine .” One source cited by the historian reports that “Novy and Johnson had been secretly shipping heavy crates labeled ‘Texas Grapefruit’ – but containing arms – to Jewish underground ‘freedom fighters’ in Palestine.”

A decade later while serving in the SenateJohnson blocked the Eisenhoweradministration’s attempts to apply sanctions against Israel following the 1956 Sinai Campaign. Among Johnson’s closest advisers during this period were several strong pro-Israel advocates, including Benjamin Cohen (who 30 years earlier was the liaison between Supreme Court justice Louis Brandeis and Chaim Weizmann) and Abe Fortas, the legendary Washington “insider.” Source

Johnson had close ties with Jewish mobster Mayer Lansky (Mayer Sukochowsky) .He  had a long and sordid record of involvement in criminal activities—including murder—that have finally begun to surface. One major Johnson backer was Meyer Lansky’s Louisiana henchman, Carlos Marcello. According to John W. Davis, Lansky’s man Marcello funneled at least $50,000 a year inpayoffs to then-Texas Senator Lyndon Johnson who, in turn, helped kill in committee all rackets-related legislation that might have been harmful to the Lansky Organized  John Davis. Mafia Kingfish: Carlos Marcello and the Assassination of John F. Kennedy. (New York:McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, 1989), p.159

When Lanskys crony, Benjamin Sigelbaum,  was involved with long time Johnson intimate Bobby Baker in two major dealings: the purchase of a bank in Tulsa, Oklahoma and in Baker’s controversial Serv-U Vending Machine Company.152

 Kennedys death

1) Removed from the White House a president— who had reached a bitter impasse with Israel over its steadfast determination to assemble a nuclear arsenal;

2) Completely reversed long-standing U.S. Middle East policy and placed the United States firmly in Israel’s camp—with a vengeance.

3) Allowed Lyndon Johnson to reverse JFK’s Vietnam policy and begin escalating U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia. This permitted Israelto advance its own geo-political stance in the Middle East; and

4) Enabled Israel’s allies in the CIA and the Meyer Lansky Organized Crime Syndicate to gain a lock on drug trafficking in Southeast Asia as a proximate result of U.S. involvement in the region.

Green summarizes the massive extent of Johnson’s giveaways: “Seventy percent of all U.S. official assistance to Israel has been military. America has given Israel over $17 billion in military aid since 1946, virtually all of which— over 99 percent—has been provided since 1965.

The crafting of UN Resolution 242 in November 1967 was done under Johnson’s scrutiny. The call resolution opposed Israel returning all the territories captured in the war. Goldberg later noted, “Resolution 242 in no way refers to Jerusalem, and this omission was deliberate.”

Johnson thought nothing of sacrificing 67 American lives in the USS Liberty attack as long as his beloved Israel was not caught out and the attack was not shown for what it really was ………a deliberate false flag attack to blame the Arabs and get the US into the war LBJ reportedly told Admiral Geiss that he did not give a damn if the ship sank that he would not embarrass an ally (Israel). There are some who say it was Johnson who actually ordered  the attack to blame the Arabs and join Israel in a mid east war,or at least had forewarning about it

Heres a small Indian link to Johnson’s crypto Jewishess. Fori Nehru (Magdolna Friedman) was the Jewish wife of Jawaharlal Nehru’s cousin B K Nehru She met Johnson during her stay in the US as part of Indira Gandhi’s (Nehru’s daughter) entourage to the US

“…During the presidency of Lyndon Johnson, (prime minister) Indira Gandhi travelled to the US. Johnson was bowled over by her. At a dinner hosted by (ambassador) B.K. Nehru and Fori in honour of Indira,Johnson dropped in unannounced. Dinner time approached but the president refused to leave, leading to a protocol crisis as the dinner was not meant for him. Finally, Fori, in her unique way, asked, ‘Mr President, why don’t you join us for dinner?’ Johnson readily agreed. Fori promptly dropped…”

President Johnson firmly pointed American policy in a pro-Israel direction. In a historical context, the American emergency airlift to Israel in 1973, the constant diplomatic support, the economic and military assistance and the strategic bonds between the two countries can all be credited to the seeds planted by LBJ.

A Friend in deed: New evidence reveals incredible aid Lyndon Johnson lent the Jews

https://www.jpost.com/Features/A-friend-in-deed

A few weeks ago, the Associated Press reported that newly released tapes from US president Lyndon Johnson's White House office showed LBJ's "personal and often emotional connection to Israel." The news agency pointed out that during the Johnson presidency (1963-1969), "the United States became Israel's chief diplomatic ally and primary arms supplier." But the news report does little to reveal the full historical extent of Johnson's actions on behalf of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Most students of the Arab-Israeli conflict can identify Johnson as the president during the 1967 war. But few know about LBJ's actions to rescue hundreds of endangered Jews during the Holocaust - actions that could have thrown him out of Congress and into jail. Indeed, the title of "Righteous Gentile" is certainly appropriate in the case of the Texan, whose centennial year is being commemorated this year. Appropriately enough, the annual Jerusalem Conference announced this week that it will honor Johnson in February 2009. Historians have revealed that Johnson, while serving as a young congressman in 1938 and 1939, arranged for visas to be supplied to Jews in Warsaw, and oversaw the apparently illegal immigration of hundreds of Jews through the port of Galveston, Texas. A key resource for uncovering LBJ's pro-Jewish activity is the unpublished 1989 doctoral thesis by University of Texas student Louis Gomolak, "Prologue: LBJ's Foreign Affairs Background, 1908-1948." Johnson's activities were confirmed by other historians in interviews with his wife, family members and political associates. Research into Johnson's personal history indicates that he inherited his concern for the Jewish people from his family. His aunt Jessie Johnson Hatcher, a major influence on LBJ, was a member of the Zionist Organization of America. According to Gomolak, Aunt Jessie had nurtured LBJ's commitment to befriending Jews for 50 years. As a young boy, Lyndon watched his politically active grandfather "Big Sam" and father "Little Sam" seek clemency for Leo Frank, the Jewish victim of a blood libel in Atlanta. Frank was lynched by a mob in 1915, and the Ku Klux Klan in Texas threatened to kill the Johnsons. The Johnsons later told friends that Lyndon's family hid in their cellar while his father and uncles stood guard with shotguns on their porch in case of KKK attacks. Johnson's speechwriter later stated, "Johnson often cited Leo Frank's lynching as the source of his opposition to both anti-Semitism and isolationism." Already in 1934 - four years before Chamberlain's Munich sellout to Hitler - Johnson was keenly alert to the dangers of Nazism and presented a book of essays, Nazism: An Assault on Civilization, to the 21-year-old woman he was courting, Claudia Taylor - later known as "Lady Bird" Johnson. It was an incredible engagement present. FIVE DAYS after taking office in 1937, LBJ broke with the "Dixiecrats" and supported an immigration bill that would naturalize illegal aliens, mostly Jews from Lithuania and Poland. That same year, LBJ warned a Jewish friend, Jim Novy, that European Jews faced annihilation. "Get as many Jewish people as possible out [of Germany and Poland]," were Johnson's instructions. Somehow, Johnson provided him with a pile of signed immigration papers that were used to get 42 Jews out of Warsaw. But that wasn't enough. According to historian James M. Smallwood, Congressman Johnson used legal and sometimes illegal methods to smuggle "hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port. Enough money could buy false passports and fake visas in Cuba, Mexico and other Latin American countries.... Johnson smuggled boatloads and planeloads of Jews into Texas. He hid them in the Texas National Youth Administration... Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more." During World War II Johnson joined Novy at a small Austin gathering to sell $65,000 in war bonds. According to Gomolak, Novy and Johnson then raised a very "substantial sum for arms for Jewish underground fighters in Palestine." One source cited by the historian reports that "Novy and Johnson had been secretly shipping heavy crates labeled 'Texas Grapefruit' - but containing arms - to Jewish underground 'freedom fighters' in Palestine." ON JUNE 4, 1945, Johnson visited Dachau. According to Smallwood, Lady Bird later recalled that when her husband returned home, "he was still shaken, stunned, terrorized and bursting with an overpowering revulsion and incredulous horror at what he had seen." A decade later while serving in the Senate, Johnson blocked the Eisenhower administration's attempts to apply sanctions against Israel following the 1956 Sinai Campaign. Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Johnson told an Israeli diplomat, "You have lost a very great friend, but you have found a better one." Just one month after succeeding Kennedy, LBJ attended the December 1963 dedication of the Agudas Achim Synagogue in Austin. Novy opened the ceremony by saying to Johnson, "We can't thank him enough for all those Jews he got out of Germany during the days of Hitler." Lady Bird would later describe the day, according to Gomolak: "Person after person plucked at my sleeve and said, 'I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for him. He helped me get out.'" Lady Bird elaborated, "Jews had been woven into the warp and woof of all [Lyndon's] years." THE PRELUDE to the 1967 war was a terrifying period for Israel, with the US State Department led by the historically unfriendly Dean Rusk urging an evenhanded policy despite Arab threats and acts of aggression. Johnson held no such illusions. After the war he placed the blame firmly on Egypt: "If a single act of folly was more responsible for this explosion than any other, it was the arbitrary and dangerous announced decision [by Egypt] that the Strait of Tiran would be closed [to Israeli ships and Israeli-bound cargo]." Kennedy was the first president to approve the sale of defensive US weapons to Israel, specifically Hawk anti-aircraft missiles. But Johnson approved tanks and fighter jets, all vital after the 1967 war when France imposed a freeze on sales to Israel. Yehuda Avner recently described on these pages prime minister Levi Eshkol's successful appeal for these weapons on a visit to the LBJ ranch. Israel won the 1967 war, and Johnson worked to make sure it also won the peace. "I sure as hell want to be careful and not run out on little Israel," Johnson said in a March 1968 conversation with his ambassador to the United Nations, Arthur Goldberg, according to White House tapes recently released. Soon after the 1967 war, Soviet premier Aleksei Kosygin asked Johnson at the Glassboro Summit why the US supported Israel when there were 80 million Arabs and only three million Israelis. "Because it is right," responded the straight-shooting Texan. The crafting of UN Resolution 242 in November 1967 was done under Johnson's scrutiny. The call for "secure and recognized boundaries" was critical. The American and British drafters of the resolution opposed Israel returning all the territories captured in the war. In September 1968, Johnson explained, "We are not the ones to say where other nations should draw lines between them that will assure each the greatest security. It is clear, however, that a return to the situation of 4 June 1967 will not bring peace. There must be secure and there must be recognized borders. Some such lines must be agreed to by the neighbors involved." Goldberg later noted, "Resolution 242 in no way refers to Jerusalem, and this omission was deliberate." This historic diplomacy was conducted under Johnson's stewardship, as Goldberg related in oral history to the Johnson Library. "I must say for Johnson," Goldberg stated. "He gave me great personal support." Robert David Johnson, a professor of history at Brooklyn College, recently wrote in The New York Sun, "Johnson's policies stemmed more from personal concerns - his friendship with leading Zionists, his belief that America had a moral obligation to bolster Israeli security and his conception of Israel as a frontier land much like his home state of Texas. His personal concerns led him to intervene when he felt that the State or Defense departments had insufficiently appreciated Israel's diplomatic or military needs." President Johnson firmly pointed American policy in a pro-Israel direction. In a historical context, the American emergency airlift to Israel in 1973, the constant diplomatic support, the economic and military assistance and the strategic bonds between the two countries can all be credited to the seeds planted by LBJ. The writer served as deputy chief of mission of the Israeli Embassy in Washington. Houston Holocaust Museum gives out annually a Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award!

https://jhvonline.com/liberation-theme-of-hmhhs-lbj-moral-courage-award-dinner-p27389-89.htm

Brig. Gen. Sparks to be honored posthumously on May 8

With the 75th anniversary of V-E Day on Friday, May 8, this year’s 25th Annual Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award Dinner will commemorate this historical event with the theme of liberation. Brig. Gen. Felix L. Sparks will receive the internationally recognized award posthumously on Monday, May 11, at the Hilton Americas-Houston, 1600 Lamar St.

Holocaust Museum Houston presents the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award to individuals who have taken a stand against injustice, hatred and prejudice, and who use their skills and influence to make a better world for all people. The Sparks family will accept the award.

The annual event – one of the city’s largest and most widely recognized philanthropic dinners – supports Holocaust Museum Houston’s worldwide educational programs. More than 900 people attended last year’s dinner, which raised $1.1 million for the museum.

Honorary chairs include The Honorable Lina Hidalgo, Harris County judge; Luci Baines Johnson; and The Honorable Sylvester Turner, mayor, city of Houston. Dinner chairs are Heidi and David Gerger, Sultana and Moez Mangalji and Andrea and Bill White. Erica and Benjy Levit serve as host committee chairs.

HMH created the LBJ Moral Courage Award in 1994, in cooperation with the Johnson family. In 1938, as a young congressman, Johnson stretched the limits of his authority and risked his personal dreams to provide American sanctuary for threatened European Jews. It is because of these acts of moral courage the museum named the award in his honor. The award recognizes either a single righteous act or a lifetime of morally courageous behavior.

Sparks, an American military commander of the 3rd Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division of the United States Army, was one of the first Allied forces to enter Dachau concentration camp and liberate its 32,000 prisoners on April 29, 1945.

He took part in the Battle of Anzio, invasions of Sicily and Provence, Battle of the Bulge and Battle of Aschaffenburg. His unit saw 511 days of combat time in World War II. Sparks was a lieutenant colonel when he led forces into Dachau, and just 27 years old. The museum honors his service to our country, and his humanity and leadership during a war filled with hatred, horrific violence and prejudice.

The New York Times bestselling author and World War II historian, Alex Kershaw, serves as keynote in conversation with Holocaust survivors Charles Kurt and Pinchas Gutter. Kershaw has written several books about World War II, including “The Liberator,” which traces the battlefield journey of Sparks through the Allied liberation of Europe – from the first landing in Italy to the final death throes of the Third Reich.

Previous recipients of the Moral Courage Award include George W. Bush, 43rd president of the United States; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel; activist and actress Mia Farrow; U.S. Sen. John McCain; Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan; former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell; former U.S. Sen. LBJ Granddaughter: Now a Jew, Married to Grandson of Concentration Camp Survivor, Sheds Light on “Operation Texas”

Claudia Taylor Brod never met her grandfather, Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36th president of the United States.

She inherited his legacy through history books, old family photos and countless stories from her grandmother, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson, who is 91 and still lives on the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, Texas.

Among the lessons handed down, Brod says, were a sense of compassion and an obligation to give back to her community.

The youngest child of Luci Baines Johnson Turpin — President Johnson’s youngest daughter — Brod, 28, says those lessons helped her realize “that I was part of this family, part of this legacy and with that came a lot of responsibility for what I had been given.”

Now Brod has begun to put those lessons into action at home in Miami Beach, where she has lived since 2000.

Donated $10,000

To celebrate the birth of her first child in February, Brod and her husband, Steven, donated $10,000, drawn from the Lyndon Johnson Family Foundation, to the Holocaust Survivors Program run by Jewish Community Services, a non-denominational agency for residents of Miami-Dade County. The gift was made on behalf of Brod’s obstetrician, Dr. Steven Silvers, but her interest in Judaism runs deep.

Brod, whose husband is the grandchild of Holocaust survivors, converted to Judaism in 2003.

It was not easy to renounce Catholicism — “I went to mass every Sunday until I turned 18,” she says — but Judaism “makes a little more sense to me.

“I started to read about the Jewish faith and I was really taken by it,” she says. “I related to its unity and its survival over thousands of years.”

Though she does not keep kosher and generally goes to temple only on holidays, Brod says she has embraced Judaism’s emphasis on family and traditions.

“I love that you’re not supposed to answer the phone [on the Sabbath] and that it gives you time to spend with family,” she says.

As a steward of the Johnson family legacy, Brod believes her grandfather’s administration is disproportionately defined by President Johnson’s ordering thousands of American troops to Vietnam and committing America to major combat there.

“That kind of saddens me,” she says.

James Smallwood, a retired history professor at Oklahoma State University, agrees that Vietnam overshadows Johnson’s populist agendas — the War on Poverty and the Great Society — and the president’s leadership in persuading Congress to pass landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act, the Voter Act, the Medicare amendment to the Social Security Act, and the Open Housing Law.

But there’s more about Johnson’s political career that remains obscure, particularly “Operation Texas,” an allegedly covert program that Smallwood says helped save dozens, perhaps hundreds, of Jews from the Holocaust.

Smallwood purports that Johnson surreptitiously supplied documents to a friend who then used those documents to help Jews flee Eastern Europe and resettle in America.

‘Some things that Johnson did were definitely unorthodox if not illegal,’ Smallwood says.

But no one has presented any evidence to support such an allegation, says Claudia Anderson, an archivist with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin. Anderson traces the legend of “Operation Texas” to a speech given by a prominent Jewish businessman in Austin, Jim Novy, during a dedication ceremony, which Johnson attended, for a synagogue named Congregation Agudas Achim in December 1963.

Helped Jews

In his dedication speech, which was recorded, Novy alleged that in 1938 then-congressman Johnson had helped arrange — through letters and telephone calls to ambassadors and immigration officials — for 42 Jewish refugees from Germany and Poland to obtain visas to enter America.

Novy’s speech also claimed that in 1940 Johnson used his political influence to skirt Texas law and help lodge Jewish refugees in state youth camps.

But, Anderson says, “there is absolutely no substantiation of that whatsoever.”

Anderson did, however, find evidence that Johnson wrote letters to U.S. embassies in Eastern Europe, prior to World War II, that helped expedite the immigration of Jewish refugees to America.

“I definitely believe Johnson helped Jewish people come into this country by helping them cut red tape and immigration procedures,” Anderson says.

Brod says she first learned of “Operation Texas” from her mother. And though she does not remember the details of the story, she found it to be “an act of moral courage” by her grandfather.

“He did some wonderful things as far as civil rights, as far as education, but this one in particular was one I could relate to,” she says. “I married someone who’s Jewish and then I became Jewish myself.”

It also cemented Brod’s conviction to carry on the family legacy of civic involvement.

“My grandmother did conservation. My grandfather did education,” she says. “I feel it’s my obligation…. The Jewish community is a good place to start.”

“Bet the Ranch!” The Times of Israel by Richard Chasman

Feb. 21, 2016

https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/bet-the-ranch/

You can bet the ranch that Bernie Sanders will not be elected as the first Jewish president. But he might be the second. Who was the first halachically Jewish president? LBJ — Lyndon Baines Johnson! I thank Rabbi Shmuel Goldin for making me aware of this fascinating story.

Quoting from the article by Morris Smith in the Five Towns Jewish Times, ‘Lyndon Johnson’s maternal ancestors, the Huffmans, apparently migrated to Frederick, Maryland from Germany sometime in the mid-eighteenth century. Later they moved to Bourbon, Kentucky and eventually settled in Texas in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. There is little doubt that he was Jewish.’

That’s not the whole story. We all know of Johnson as the outstanding president who pushed through the voting rights act, the war on poverty and the Great Society agenda. Many of us are aware of Johnson’s concern and help for Israel during and after the 1967 war but few are aware of his helping Jewish refugees escape from Germany and Poland in the 1930s. The article notes, ‘That same year{1937}, LBJ warned Jewish friend, Jim Novy, that European Jews faced annihilation. Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more.”’

The Johnson story reminds us that taking in refugees can be a matter of life and death. That should inform our attitudes toward the US taking in refugees today.

In the Johnson presidential years, Israeli leaders understood the importance of maintaining good relations with the president of the United States. PM Netanyahu ignores this and acts as a Republican shill. He seems to be doubling down and meddling in US politics again after his failure to stop the JCPOA. In the Jerusalem Post of February 17, Gil Hoffman reports, ‘Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must reach an agreement with US President Barack Obama’s administration on a new Memorandum of Understanding governing US military aid to Israel as soon as possible, opposition leaders Isaac Herzog and Yair Lapid told the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations this week.

A friend in deed

New evidence reveals incredible aid Lyndon Johnson lent the Jews.

LENNY BEN-DAVID

SEPTEMBER 9, 2008 20:44

After the war he placed the blame firmly on Egypt: "If

a single act of folly was more responsible for this explosion than any other, it was the arbitrary and dangerous announced decision [by Egypt] that the Strait of Tiran would be closed [to Israeli ships and Israeli-bound cargo]." Kennedy was the first president to approve the sale of defensive US weapons to Israel, specifically Hawk anti-aircraft missiles. In September 1968, Johnson explained, "We are not the ones to say where other nations should draw lines between

them that will assure each the greatest security. Lewis Gould on Lyndon Johnson’s pro-Israel stance in the Suez crisis of 1956

“The Gentleman From Texas,” Lewis Gould, LA Times, April 28, 2002

QUOTE

Caro is also silent about the substance of the Suez crisis of 1956 and Johnson’s pro-Israel stance at that time. One of the most interesting revelations regarding Johnson during the last two decades has been about his efforts in the 1930s and 1940s on behalf of Jews seeking to escape the Nazis. Working with Jewish leaders in the Austin area, Johnson went well beyond other American politicians in his efforts to enable Jews to enter the United States.

Scholars have been exploring the leads in this area first developed by Louis Gomolak, a graduate student at the University of Texas, in his 1989 dissertation. Caro does not examine this subject in analyzing Johnson’s compassion, his views on world affairs or the historical roots of his presidential policies toward Israel during the 1960s

Lyndon Johnson Was Scheduled To Visit My Austin Shul the Day After Kennedy Died

But in December 1963, the new president made up the date, honoring a long Jewish friendship

On Nov. 22, 1963, the women of the Congregation Agudas Achim Sisterhood in Austin, Texas, were working in their new kosher kitchen, mixing potato salad for the several hundred people expected to turn up at the dedication of their new synagogue the next day—a group that was to include Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, formerly the congregation’s longtime congressman. The women didn’t have enough mixing bowls, so they wound up using the synagogue’s brand-new plastic trashcans to prepare the potato salad, a detail their honored guest would never need to know.

Of course, Johnson never made it to Austin. Instead of holding a joyous celebration, the congregants gathered to mourn the death of John F. Kennedy and pray for their old friend Lyndon, who had just been sworn in as president on Air Force One, standing next to the blood-spattered and shocked former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. No one expected that he would reschedule his visit—but, ever the consummate politician, Johnson decided to keep his promise, and on Dec. 28, the new president arrived at the new Agudas Achim building.

The synagogue owed its new location on Bull Creek to Johnson’s intercession in a real-estate deal. It’s highly probable that no American president has ever been as intimately involved in the construction of a shul as Johnson was in this one. In October 1963, as vice president, he loaned his Lincoln Continental convertible to congregant Morris Shapiro, who drove the Torah scrolls the three or four miles from Congregation Agudas Achim’s downtown location to its new suburban home amid a parade of marching Jews.

The connection between Johnson and Agudas Achim was Jim Novy, a Polish-born immigrant who wound up in Texas under the Galveston Plan and made a small fortune in scrap metal. One of Johnson’s earliest political allies in Austin, Novy, pillar of Austin’s Orthodox congregation, was instrumental in building the synagogue. For many Austin Jews, their relationship with Johnson had been so close that he was almost too familiar; Milton Simons, who was Agudas Achim’s president in the autumn of 1963, recalled that some of the congregants knew the vice president so well they refused to pay to hear him speak at the synagogue dedication.

The assassination changed that: When the dedication was rescheduled, a gully wash of people from all over the country wanted in, offering what Simons described as “enough money to pay the mortgage,” just to come to Austin to hear the new president talk to the Jews. In the end, it was Novy who kept the strangers out: As far as he was concerned, Austin Jews were LBJ’s Jews, and even “the people too cheap to buy tickets,” in Simons’ estimation, should be there to hear the new president’s first non-official public remarks as president.

I first encountered the story of the synagogue dedication in 1988, while writing a book about Texas Jews. In 2000, when Agudas Achim moved to its current location at the Dell Jewish Community Campus, I volunteered to produce a video to mark the occasion and interviewed congregants who attended the 1963 event, many of whom have since passed away.

Johnson had a special place in his heart for Jim Novy. Their relationship likely began in the early 1930s, when Lyndon worked as secretary and go-to man for Rep. Richard Kleberg, a member of the King ranching family who preferred polo to politics and gave Johnson wide berth. He became a regular presence at meetings of the B’nai B’rith Lodge and Zionist groups. It’s not clear whether Novy made his way to Washington to advocate for Zionist causes, as his daughter Elaine Shapiro believes, or to sell scrap metal to the federal government, as a distant cousin, Benard Laves, told me, but either way, he returned with a lifelong friend.

When Johnson moved back to Austin in 1935 to serve as Texas director of the National Youth Corps, he set up his office at 6th Street and Congress Avenue, at what was then the intersection between high-end Austin and the Jewish-owned schmatte stores along 6th Street. When it was time to raise funds to support Johnson’s first run for Congress, in 1937, the B’nai Brith members and Zionist activists Johnson met at Novy’s lake lodge.

Laves, a born raconteur, remembered walking up 6th toward Congress as a child with his father. He spotted Johnson and wanted to meet him, but his father cautioned, “Just let Lyndon alone to do his thing.” That day, LBJ walked with Jake Pickle, the advertising man who would eventually succeed him as representative of the Tenth District. Jake called to Benard’s father, “Hey, Louie!” He escorted LBJ across the street to greet them. “This great big tall guy, I’m a little kid looking up at him, this terrible look on his face, meaner than hell,” Laves recalled to me in 2009. (He died earlier this year.) “And all of a sudden he smiled, and it was like the sun coming out from behind a cloud.”

Johnson’s constituents in the 10th District included all kinds of minorities: blacks, Mexicans, and immigrants from dirt farms who spoke English, Spanish, Czech, German, and Yiddish. It was a time, as Johnson recounted to the congregation in December 1963, when newspapers were published in a dozen languages to serve Austin’s many immigrants. The vast majority of Austin’s Jews were Democrats, and when Austin’s Jews were troubled about something or needed help, Johnson answered their calls and got results.

But it was his strong and enduring relationship with Novy that led to a sweetheart land deal in the early 1960s by which Congregation Agudas Achim sold its downtown building to the federal government and then applied the proceeds to land along the Missouri Pacific railroad easements that ran through the new suburbs of north Austin. Today, Austin’s Federal Building stands at the site of the old synagogue.

Continue reading: “I said I would be there”

Early one morning after the sh’loshim for Kennedy were over, Novy received a call from President Johnson. “He told Daddy, ‘I said I would be there, and I’m going to be there,’” Elaine Shapiro said. With only a week’s notice, the members of Congregation Agudas Achim hustled once again to prepare. The shul’s decorations committee set the stage for the possibility that there might be television cameras in attendance. The Sisterhood catering team thawed out the barbecue and remade the potato salad and Jell-O mold. Shirley Rubinett remembered that the Secret Service sent taste-testers, and the president was supposed to eat only what they approved. But, in the end, she told me, “He ate whatever he wanted, he gobbled it down, he was hungry.”

Almost every person I spoke with said the most memorable image of the evening was entering the synagogue vestibule and seeing a red telephone on the table—a cultural icon preserved in the congregants’ collective memory as the infamous “red phone” connecting Washington and Moscow, though it could not have been. Ann and Saul Ginsburg’s son, David, played “Hail to the Chief” on the Spinet piano. The suave and articulate Dr. Polsky emceed the evening, and Jim Novy introduced the president with a litany of stories of all the times Johnson had helped him and the Jews. “I’ve always called on President Johnson to give us a help,” Novy told the crowd. “And there was never a time that I asked the president that he wouldn’t take care of Jewish problems.” In fact, Novy’s introduction that night is what gave rise to the persistent Internet rumors that Johnson was a righteous gentile who saved hundreds of Jewish lives before and during WWII, though exhaustive searches by Johnson Library archivist Claudia Anderson have turned up no primary-source proof to substantiate the rumors.

After the community poured out its affection, President Johnson rose to speak. In his remarks—captured on a 33 1/3 LP for congregants to keep as a souvenir—he revealed the reciprocity of the trust and respect he felt, as well as the strength he drew from them. He combined a tribute to his home community and the Jewish people with remarks that foreshadowed his War on Poverty, which we Texans chose to hold in our memories in a more elevated place than the missteps in Vietnam that ultimately doomed his leadership. And he offered his personal tribute to Jim Novy: “If we have leaders like this good man who has spent so many of his hours in the years past trying to build temples like this, temples where men can worship, temples where justice reigns, temples where the free are welcome, temples where the dignity of man prevails, then America will truly be worthy of the leadership we claim, and the rest of the world will follow us where we lead.”

When Novy died, in 1971, Johnson—by then out of the White House and back in Texas—sat alone in the back of the sanctuary, without Secret Service or aides or hangers-on, wearing a kippah. Shortly after, Johnson also died of heart disease. It would seem that the partnership forged by the two men and the benefits yielded to Congregation Agudas Achim had come to an end. But there is a postscript to this story: During the later years of the Johnson presidency, Encyclopedia Judaica approached Jim Novy to see if he could persuade the president to help fund them. Through Novy’s influence, they were able to obtain an interest-free $2 million loan to conduct the research needed to replace the old Jewish Encyclopedia with a version that reflected both the Holocaust and the birth of the State of Israel. In return for the favor, Novy asked for 100 sets of encyclopedias to sell as a fundraiser. The proceeds arrived after the deaths of both Johnson and Novy, but Dr. Byron Smith, another former shul president, hoarded the money and hid it from anyone who wanted to use it to pay for day-to-day operations to pay down the Bull Creek mortgage, years in advance.

We Texas Jews just loved LBJ. It wasn’t just that he helped Austin Jews build a shul or that so many of us benefited from the “kosher pork” Johnson brought home. (My father was a chemical engineer who worked to make solid rocket fuel to be sold to NASA.) I remember how, on the day Johnson was inaugurated in 1965, my father proudly pointed to Rabbi Hyman Judah Schachtel of Houston standing right there next to the president of the United States. To have my grandparents’ rabbi make the invocation gave a 10-year-old Jewish girl from Waco a sense of belonging. A few years later, in 1971—the year Jim Novy died—I attended a youth gathering at the Religious Action Center in Washington, D.C., and for the first time heard my peers characterizing LBJ as a warmongering ignoramus with a drawl. To this day I hear the echo of my kishkes: Didn’t they know? Didn’t they know that LBJ was one of us?

ditor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that President Johnson was not, in fact, the first sitting American president to dedicate a synagogue. That honor belongs to President Ulysses S. Grant, who attended the dedication of Washington’s Adas Israel in 1876.

THE VAST MAJORITY of mainstream obituaries for Mathilde Krim, a founding chairman of The Foundation for AIDS Research, or amfAR, who died Jan. 15 at her home on Long Island, New York at the age of 91, identified her as an AIDS activist: The New York Times, for example, described her as a “Mobilizing Force in an AIDS Crusade,” while The Washington Post deemed her a “Scientist Turned Activist Who Helped Strip AIDS of Its Stigma.”

As longtime Washington Report readers are aware, however,  before Krim was an activist for AIDS patients, she was an “activist”—and a very influential one—for Israel.

According to The New York Times, Krim “was born Mathilde Galland in Como, Italy, on July 9, 1926, to Eugene Galland, a Swiss-Italian, and the former Elizabeth Krause, an Austrian. Her father was an agronomist. The family moved to Geneva when Mathilde was 6.

“At the University of Geneva, Mathilde was a brilliant student of biology and genetics. Appalled by newsreels of Nazi concentration camps in 1945, she sought out Jewish activists, joined the Zionist underground Irgun and spent a summer smuggling guns over the French border for resistance [sic] fighters against British rule in Palestine.”

In an article in the June 1993 Washington Report, however, author Grace Halsell described Krim’s adventures differently:

“While a student in Geneva, she fell in love with a young Bulgarian Jew, David Danon, who had been brought up in Palestine and exiled by the British for his association with the Irgun Zvai Leumi, a Jewish terrorist group led by Menachem Begin. Danon was studying to become a medical doctor, but spent most of his time recruiting and carrying out secret Irgun operations throughout Western Europe.…

“Mathilde became so enamored of the Jewish struggle and of Danon’s daring undercover operations in Europe that she converted to Judaism and married Danon. Then she, too, became an Irgun agent.”

As Donald Neff reported in his article “Hamas: A Pale Image of the Jewish Irgun and Lehi Gangs” (see May/June 2006  Washington Report, p. 14): “The Irgun was led by Menachem Begin, the future Israeli prime minister…[It] was the dominant Jewish terrorist organization, both in size and the number and frequency of its attacks. Its most spectacular feat up to this time had been the July 22, 1946 blowing up of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, with the killing of 91 people—41 Arabs, 28 British and 17 Jews.”

In 1953, after Krim received her doctorate, the couple emigrated to Israel. In 1954 Krim joined a research team at the Weizmann Institute of Science. After the birth of their daughter, however, the marriage ended in divorce. In 1958 Krim married entertainment lawyer Arthur B. Krim, a Weizmann trustee whom Neff described as president of United Artists Corporation of Hollywood, a New York attorney and another major Democratic fund-raiser. He served as chairman of the Democratic National Party Finance Committee and chairman of the President’s Club of New York, the most potent source of [President Lyndon B.] Johnson’s campaign funds.” (See Nov./Dec. 1996 Washington Report, p. 96.)

The Krims moved from Israel to New York the following year.

Fast forward to 1967. According to Neff—who interviewed Krim for his book Warriors for Jerusalem: The Six Days That Changed the Middle East (available from AET’s Middle East Books and More)—“Mathilde Krim stayed at the White House during much of the 1967 war and was a regular caller at the Israeli Embassy, passing reports and gossip back and forth. The Krims, like other Johnson friends, did not hesitate to advise the president on Middle East policy.”

In her June 1993 article, Halsell recalled that, as a staff writer at the Johnson White House, “On occasion I saw a strikingly attractive blonde woman who, I learned, was an ardent supporter of Israel and a woman of whom the president was fond.”

That woman was Mathilde Krim.

“LBJ often invited the Krims to his Texas ranch,” Halsell wrote. “There also were many instances in which Arthur and Mathilde were guests at the White House, and other times when, for many days running, Mathilde—without her husband—was a guest there. The Krims built a house near the LBJ ranch known as Mathilde’s house, and Johnson often traveled there by helicopter.”

Having spent the 1967 Memorial Day weekend with the Krims at his ranch, Halsell continued:

“On June 3, Johnson traveled to New York to deliver a speech at a Democratic Party fund-raising dinner. He moved on to a $1,000-a-plate dinner dance, sponsored by the President’s Club of New York, whose chairman was Arthur Krim. While at the table, fund-raiser Abe Feinberg leaned over the shoulder of Mathilde Krim, seated next to Johnson, and whispered: ‘Mr. President, it [Israel’s attack] can’t be held any longer. It’s going to be within the next 24 hours.’

“On June 4, Johnson went to the home of his close adviser and friend, Justice Abe Fortas. The following day, June 5, [Special Assistant for National Security Affairs Walt] Rostow woke Johnson with a phone call at 4:30 a.m. ‘War has broken out,’ Rostow said. The Israelis had attacked Egypt and Syria.

“Mathilde Krim was a guest at the White House and, before going to the Oval Office, and apparently before waking Lady Bird or notifying anyone else, Johnson dropped by the bedroom where Mathilde was sleeping and gave her the news: ‘The war has started.’…

“[O]n June 5, Arthur Krim wrote a memo to the president saying: ‘Many arms shipments are packed and ready to go to Israel, but are being held up. It would be helpful if these could be released.’ Johnson got the shipments on their way.…

“Mathilde Krim, still a guest in the White House, left for meetings in New York. Before departing, however, she wrote out a statement supportive of Israel which she asked the president to deliver ‘verbatim to the American people.’ Johnson was sufficiently impressed with her comments to, later in the day, read some of them to Secretary of State Dean Rusk. But the president did not, as she had asked, read them to the American people.…

“Meanwhile, on the night of June 7, the USS Liberty, a Navy ‘ferret’ ship equipped to monitor electronic communications, had approached within sight of the Gaza Strip so the National Security Agency personnel aboard could intercept the military communications jamming the airwaves. The president retired at 11:30 p.m., but White House logs reported that at one minute to midnight he got a call from Mathilde Krim, still in New York.”

The next day Israel attacked the USS Liberty, killing 34 Americans and wounding 171.

According to Neff’s 1996 account: “How influential the Krims were in forming Johnson’s Middle East policy was hinted at by notes in the president’s daily diary for June 17, 1967. The notes reported that at a dinner with the Krims and others at Camp David, Johnson openly discussed a speech he was working on that was to establish the nation’s Middle East policy for the years ahead.

“According to the notes, Johnson read from various drafts of the speech around the dinner table, ‘inserting additions and making changes, also accepting comments and suggestions from all at the table.’ Thus two passionate partisans of Israel, the Krims, helped Johnson refine what was later called the “five great principles of peace,” the pillars of U.S. policy in the Middle East for the next two decades.”

Uslan wrote in a Facebook reminiscence that Melniker was no less serious, refusing to write his memoirs out of a sense of personal responsibility. Although he knew where all the skeletons of Old Hollywood were buried, Melniker did not want to “negatively impact those people, their children or their grandchildren,” Uslan observes, concluding: “Ben was a mensch.” A brilliant legally-minded mensch, one might add. Due to his role a confidential negotiator, Melniker doubtless felt it would be inappropriate to divulge insider gossip in a tell-all. Although Hollywood history has been preserved by yentas, discretion was the better part of valor for Melniker, born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1913. He was entirely more forthcoming when doing the hondling.

Uslan’s autobiography, recalls that even before their first Batman movie was greenlighted, he worked with Melniker to revive another DC Comics character, Swamp Thing, in a 1982 film directed by Wes Craven. Uslan and Craven watched in awe as Melniker, then almost 70, took charge of negotiations at an LA restaurant table, “occasionally resorting to speaking Yiddish.” Melniker’s reputation as a relentless negotiator at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, which hired him in 1939, led to his being nicknamed the MGM Lion.
